Two-Year-Old Boy Dies After Suspected Hit-and-Run in Rathkeale, Ireland

A two-year-old boy has died after being struck by a Jeep while playing near his home in Rathkeale, County Limerick, Ireland, on the afternoon of Saturday, September 5.

The child, identified as Peter Mulcaire, was hit in the Abbey Court area at approximately 3:20 p.m. The vehicle involved allegedly failed to stop at the scene, prompting Gardaí to investigate the incident as a suspected hit-and-run.

A man in his 30s was later arrested by Gardaí at a separate location in connection with the incident. He was detained for blood and urine testing on suspicion of driving under the influence of an intoxicant.

The man was subsequently released pending analysis of the samples. At this stage, there is no information indicating that he has been formally charged.

Gardaí have launched a detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding Peter’s death. A post-mortem examination has been scheduled, while forensic collision investigators have examined the scene and are working to establish exactly what happened.

Authorities are now appealing to members of the public who may have witnessed the incident or captured relevant footage.

In particular, Gardaí are asking anyone who travelled through the Abbey Court area of Rathkeale between approximately 3:20 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. on September 5 to come forward. Motorists who may have dashcam footage from the area during that period are being urged to review their recordings and contact investigators if they captured anything that could assist the inquiry.

The death of the young child has left the local community mourning as investigators continue to piece together the events leading up to the fatal collision.

Gardaí have not released further details about the circumstances of the crash while the investigation remains ongoing.
