A quiet fishing trip turned into a frightening battle when a fisherman came face-to-face with one of the ocean’s most unexpected fighters.

What started as a normal catch quickly became a struggle for survival.

Fisherman Jesser Cervantes was fishing near Puerto Princesa Island in Palawan, Philippines, when he pulled an octopus from the water — but moments later, the creature launched a shocking counterattack.

The octopus suddenly wrapped its tentacles around his face, using its powerful suction cups to lock itself onto him.

In dramatic footage shared online, Cervantes can be seen desperately trying to pull the creature away as its arms spread across his head and mouth, making it difficult for him to breathe.

For several terrifying moments, the fisherman fought against the creature’s grip.

But the octopus refused to let go.

With his hands unable to free himself, Cervantes grabbed a piece of bamboo and struck the animal repeatedly until it finally released him.

After the frightening encounter, he managed to regain control, returned the octopus to the ocean, and escaped without serious injuries.

“The octopus I caught was very hard to handle. It almost ripped my face,” Cervantes later said.

Experts explain that octopuses are incredibly strong for their size. Their flexible bodies and hundreds of powerful suction cups allow them to grip tightly onto surfaces — making them extremely difficult to remove once attached.

Although octopuses are not normally aggressive toward humans, they can react defensively when they feel threatened.

For Cervantes, the ocean delivered a reminder he will never forget:
