A 13-year-old boy has been charged after he allegedly was intent on targeting his ex during a school game of dodgeball during PE.

Abel Schipper admitted he targeted the girl ‘a little bit’, but only because you ‘have to target somebody’ during the game.

However, the Mayer High School student landed himself in hot water when the girl came out in two bruises, and the case went to juvenile court in Arizona.

The incident is said to have occurred in December 2025, which saw the accused and two of his friends ‘relentlessly’ attack the schoolgirl with the balls during their PE lesson.

Now, he’s ended up being charged with misdemeanour assault for the act.

Just two days after the event, the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office was contacted by a social worker from Banner Health, who reportedly alleged the girl had been taken to hospital over the incident.

According to a police report, they were told Schipper and friends ‘relentlessly assaulted her with dodgeballs when she came out of the bathroom’.

Her mother had also allegedly documented her injuries, which included two large blue and purple bruises on her upper-right rib cage, and her lower-right abdomen.

But the lads say they didn’t intend to cause her harm.

“I wouldn’t say we were on good terms, but I also wouldn’t say we were on bad terms,” he said per WWNY. “She used to hit me a lot, and then, she kind of just broke it off after that.”

During a TV appearance with Arizona’s Family, Schipper said: “We threw around the dodgeballs, and then, I throw it at her. I hit her. One of the kids missed. The other kid also hit.”

He went on to admit: “I’m not going to lie. I did target her a little bit.”

However, he said it’s all part of the game, noting, per WWNY: “Obviously, I’m going to have to target somebody for dodgeball. It’s dodgeball. You have to choose somebody, throw the ball, then try to get them out. I didn’t want to hurt her at all.”

According to the student, he didn’t believe the balls were capable of causing harm, telling the outlet: “I didn’t think a dodgeball would hurt, and these are small ones too. So, you can squeeze them and they compress and stuff.”

As for his mother, Cecily Schipper, she has a lot of questions to be answered.

According to her, when the Yavapai County Juvenile Justice Center sent her a letter saying her son had been charged with misdemeanour assault, she thought the whole thing was ‘ridiculous’.

She said: “They’re considering the dodgeball a weapon and that he knowingly or willingly, recklessly harmed this girl just playing dodgeball in PE.”

She claimed the kids had stayed in contact after the fact, and that there had even been requests to her for lifts in her car.

As for now, the Schipper family claim two of the three boys charged for the crime are to appear in court on Monday (17 August).
