His name is Xavier Taylor.

And just hours before that moment, his father is sharing signs of progress that have given the family another reason to keep believing.

Xavier has been unresponsive since May 26, when a baseball struck him in the neck during warmups before a championship game in New Jersey.

He collapsed.

His heart stopped.

And everything changed.

Nearly four months later, Xavier remains on a ventilator — but his father says his body is showing signs of improvement.

According to new reporting from WPVI’s Trish Hartman, Xavier has been moved from the hospital to a short-term care facility and is no longer receiving regular medication beyond what is necessary for his care and nutrition.

“He’s regulating his own body temperature,” his father, Gregory Taylor, told WPVI.

“He’s off the extra electrolyte fluids because his lab work is coming back and it’s beautiful.”

And Gregory says another change is visible every time the family looks at their son.

Xavier has gained weight.

“When we look at Xave every day, we see Xavier,” Gregory said. “We don’t see that frail boy from May and early June.”

For a family that has spent nearly four months waiting, those changes matter.

But they are still waiting for the one moment that would change everything:

Gregory told WPVI he often imagines what his son might say when that day finally comes.

“I honestly think one of the first things he’s going to say is, ‘What did I miss?’”

And his father already knows what he wants to show him.

“How about we show you what you’ve done.”

Because Xavier has already done something remarkable.

His story has crossed state lines.

Teams have worn his No. 6.

Communities have gathered for him.

Buildings have been illuminated in blue.

And complete strangers have prayed for a child they have never met.
