A little girl with a rare birth condition smiles brightly for the first time after surgery — and the moment touched so many hearts.

Little Riley Johnson from Baltimore, Maryland, was born with a congenital condition involving a cleft lip and palate. Her mouth looked very different at birth, with part of her upper lip turned inward while another section extended outward. There was also a significant gap between her lip and gums, while her nose had not developed in the usual way.

These differences made everyday activities such as eating and speaking extremely difficult for Riley.

“When the ultrasound at 20 weeks of pregnancy showed that something was different around my baby’s mouth, I was extremely worried. But when Riley was born, seeing her sweet and beautiful face helped ease so many of my fears,” Riley’s mother, Angela, recalled emotionally.

However, whenever Angela took Riley outside, she noticed people staring at her daughter. It deeply affected her and made her worry about what life might be like for Riley as she grew older. That was when she decided to explore surgery that could help restore a more natural smile for her little girl.

About a month ago, Riley underwent a procedure in which tissue from her lower lip was repositioned to help reconstruct her upper lip and nose area. The successful surgery allowed the little girl to show a bright, complete smile and pronounce the letter “M” for the first time — something she had not been able to do before.

“When Riley came out of the operating room, I cried. She looked absolutely beautiful, and I felt incredibly blessed to have her,” Angela recalled with emotion.

Before the procedure, Riley had also been fitted with a specialized device designed to gradually stretch the skin around her nose and support the reconstruction of her mouth.

“The device slowly stretched the skin to help create the middle part of her nose and allowed her mouth to take on a more natural shape. We are so grateful. From now on, she can grow up like other children and hopefully feel much more confident.

If she ever doesn’t want to eat, she can now close her lips together. Her smile also looks much more complete and expresses her happiness in a way we had never seen before.

After the surgery, I watched her play with her upper lip, and every now and then she would smile because she seemed fascinated by the change. She cannot say ‘Mama’ yet, but I believe it won’t be long before she does.”

The entire treatment came with significant costs. The specialized stretching device alone was difficult to obtain, and Angela spent $6,500 on it, equivalent to around 130 million Vietnamese dong.

The mother is now also raising funds in hopes of covering the medical expenses associated with her daughter’s treatment.
