MISSING GRANDMOTHER’S BODY FOUND INSIDE SUITCASE AFTER TWO PEOPLE BRING IT TO KANSAS FIRE STATION

A family in Wichita, Kansas, is desperately seeking answers after a missing 67-year-old grandmother was found dead inside a suitcase that two people brought to a local fire station.

Lorretta M. Moody had been reported missing earlier on September 16, 2026.

Later that same day, two people arrived at Wichita Fire Station 22 carrying a suitcase and told firefighters that a body was inside.

What followed has now become a homicide investigation.

POLICE DISCOVERED A WOMAN’S REMAINS INSIDE THE SUITCASE

At approximately 6:25 p.m. on September 16, firefighters requested an urgent police response after the two individuals arrived at the station.

Officers opened the suitcase and discovered the remains of a woman.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police later identified the woman as Lorretta Moody, who had previously been reported missing to law enforcement. Her body was transported to the Sedgwick County Medical Examiner’s Office for examination.

Authorities have not publicly released Moody’s cause of death.

THE TWO PEOPLE WHO BROUGHT THE SUITCASE WERE QUESTIONED

The two individuals who brought the suitcase to the fire station were questioned by detectives.

Police have not publicly identified them or disclosed whether they had a relationship with Moody.

Investigators are working to establish how Moody died, how her body ended up inside the suitcase and how the people who delivered it were connected to the case.

No arrests had been announced as of September 24.

Police have also said there is no information indicating an ongoing threat to the public.

HER FAMILY WANTS PEOPLE TO REMEMBER WHO SHE WAS

For Moody’s grandchildren, the circumstances surrounding her death have been especially painful.

Her granddaughter Alexis Trotter said the family is struggling to understand what happened and wants Moody remembered as a loving grandmother and great-grandmother rather than simply as the woman whose body was found in a suitcase.

“She wasn’t just a woman in a suitcase,” granddaughter Lexi Shafer told local media.

Shafer also described Moody as someone who loved being around her family.

“She just loved to be with family,” Shafer said, according to PEOPLE.

Moody would have turned 68 on September 27.

Her family has also started a fundraiser to help cover funeral and memorial expenses.

$5,000 REWARD OFFERED FOR INFORMATION

The investigation received a new development on September 24 when Crime Stoppers of Wichita and Sedgwick County announced a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to an arrest in Moody’s homicide.

Investigators are asking anyone who may have information about Moody, the suitcase or the events surrounding her death to come forward.

Police continue to interview people, review evidence and reconstruct the timeline leading up to the discovery.

For now, many questions remain unanswered — including who was responsible for Moody’s death and why her body was brought to a fire station.
