“IS HERKULES’ LEGACY STILL ALIVE?” — THE YORKSHIRE VET RETURNS TO CANNON HALL FARM FOR AN EMOTIONAL SHIRE HORSE UPDATE

Cannon Hall Farm has been facing another emotional chapter in its Shire horse story, as The Yorkshire Vet returned to the farm to examine whether the legacy of much-loved stallion Herkules could continue.

In the latest episode, equine vet Shona Searson visited the South Yorkshire farm to scan two mares, Silver and Brooke, as the Nicholson family waited to discover whether they could be carrying foals fathered by Herkules.

The moment carried particular significance for farmers Rob and Dave Nicholson after the devastating loss of the young stallion.

HERKULES WAS THE “HORSE OF A LIFETIME”

Herkules was a three-year-old Shire stallion who became a much-loved part of Cannon Hall Farm’s breeding programme.

The huge horse died in June 2025 after developing colic that resulted in an intestinal blockage and damage.

The farm rushed him to Rainbow Equine Hospital for emergency surgery, but he could not be saved.

Cannon Hall Farm later described the loss as heartbreaking, with Rob Nicholson saying Herkules had been an animal with an extraordinary future ahead of him.

For the Nicholson family, his death was not simply the loss of a horse.

Herkules had been part of their long-term effort to help increase the number of Shire horses in Britain.

NOW, THERE MAY BE A CHANCE FOR HIS LEGACY TO CONTINUE

More than a year after Herkules’ death, viewers saw Shona Searson examining Silver and Brooke.

The scans were carried out to determine whether either mare could be carrying a foal by Herkules.

For Rob and Dave, the possibility represents something deeply personal.

After losing Herkules so young, the prospect of seeing another generation connected to him offers a reason to hope.

The episode described the scans as representing a chance for the Nicholson family’s beloved stallion to leave something behind.

THE FARM HAS FACED MULTIPLE HEARTBREAKS

Herkules was not the only devastating loss suffered by the farm’s Shire family.

In February 2022, Cannon Hall Farm announced the death of Lottie, a much-loved 19-hand Shire horse, following a sudden deterioration in her health.

More recently, the farm also suffered the loss of Ruby, another much-loved horse.

The repeated losses have made the survival and breeding of the Shire horses particularly important to the Nicholson family and their supporters.

FIVE YOUNG SHIRES ARE NOW PART OF THE STORY

Despite the difficult years, there is also new life at Cannon Hall Farm.

The farm’s current Shire Foal Experience introduces visitors to five young horses:

Soldier, Iris, Athena, Captain and Major.

The farm says thousands of people have followed the animals’ journeys online as it continues its efforts to increase the numbers of the Shire breed.

Visitors can now see the foals as part of a special experience at the farm.

The farm’s own description also acknowledges the difficult journey behind the new generation, inviting visitors to remember the animals that were lost while watching the young Shires grow.

The emotional Shire horse story has become one of the most followed parts of Cannon Hall Farm’s online presence.

Fans have watched the Nicholson family celebrate births, deal with illness and grieve animals that had become part of the farm’s extended family.

Now, attention is turning toward the future.
