TOM JONES SPEAKS OUT AFTER SHOCK EXIT FROM THE VOICE UK

LONDON — Sir Tom Jones has broken his silence after being dropped as a full-time coach on The Voice UK, revealing that he did not want to leave the hit singing competition and had been offered a significantly reduced role instead.

The Welsh music legend, who has been part of The Voice UK since its launch in 2012, said the decision came from ITV and that he was only informed recently.

In a statement shared on Instagram, Jones made clear that leaving the programme was not his choice.

“I did not want to leave The Voice as I love the show and really appreciate the audience.”

According to Jones, ITV had offered him what he described as a “much-reduced role”, which would have allowed him to make an appearance but not participate as a full-time coach from the beginning of the series.

He said he was not enthusiastic about the proposal.

An ITV spokesperson subsequently confirmed that Jones would no longer be a full-time coach for the next series, while saying the broadcaster remained in discussions with him and his team about possible involvement.

A 14-YEAR CONNECTION WITH THE SHOW

Jones became one of the original coaches when The Voice UK launched in 2012.

Over the years, he became one of the programme’s most recognisable figures, appearing alongside a changing line-up of international singers and British music stars.

His tenure has included coaching alongside artists such as Will.i.am, Kelly Rowland, Jessie J, Kylie Minogue and Rita Ora.

He also coached three winners of the programme — Leanne Mitchell, Ruti Olajugbagbe and Anthonia Edwards.

His departure therefore marks a major change for a show with which audiences have associated him for more than a decade.

WHY DID ITV WANT A CHANGE?

Jones said ITV’s decision was connected to what he was told were financial difficulties involving insurance.

He said the broadcaster had made its decision some time earlier but that he was only recently informed.

ITV has not publicly characterised the decision as Jones being “fired” in the same terms used by the singer.

Instead, the broadcaster thanked him for his contribution and confirmed that discussions were continuing over whether he could have some involvement in the next series.

The change comes as The Voice UK prepares for a substantial overhaul of its coaching and presenting line-up.

A NEW ERA FOR THE VOICE UK

The next series is expected to feature a significantly different panel.

Reports say Cheryl will take Jones’s former coaching position, while Aitch will join Kelly Rowland and Will.i.am.

The presenting team is also changing, with long-time host Emma Willis leaving the programme and Stacey Solomon and Alesha Dixon reportedly taking over as co-hosts.

McFly’s Danny Jones and Tom Fletcher are also leaving their coaching roles.

The format itself is reportedly being changed as well.

THE NEW “LOCKDOWN” TWIST

According to reports, producers are introducing a new “Lockdown Button” during the Blind Auditions.

The feature would reportedly be used when all four coaches turn their chairs for a contestant.

Under the reported format, one coach could press the button and automatically secure the singer for their team.

That would remove the familiar stage in which a four-chair-turn contestant listens to the coaches’ pitches before choosing which team to join.

The new feature is reportedly replacing the Rewind Button, which will not return for the next series.

The changes mean viewers will see a very different Voice UK when the new series arrives.

TOM JONES’S EXTRAORDINARY CAREER

Away from television, Jones remains one of Britain’s most recognisable performers.

His career has lasted more than six decades and includes global hits such as “It’s Not Unusual,” “Delilah” and “She’s a Lady.”

He has won a Grammy Award, Brit Awards and an Ivor Novello Award and was knighted in 2006 for his services to music.

His long association with The Voice UK has added another chapter to an already remarkable career.

But at 86, Jones made it clear that he still wanted to continue working on the programme.

His comment that “there’s never a good time to fire an 86-year-old who’s still pretty good at his job” quickly became one of the most widely discussed parts of his statement.

WILL TOM JONES RETURN?

For now, his future involvement remains uncertain.

ITV has said it continues to talk to Jones and his representatives about a possible role in the next series.

That leaves open the possibility that audiences could still see the legendary singer on The Voice UK, although he will no longer serve as a full-time coach under the current plans.

Whatever happens next, one thing is clear: after more than a decade in the red chair, the next chapter of The Voice UK will look very different without Sir Tom Jones as a permanent coach.

And the singer himself has made it equally clear that leaving the show was not the ending he had chosen for himself.
