ONE YEAR WITHOUT GUS: $1 MILLION REWARD ANNOUNCED AS PARENTS MAKE HEARTBREAKING APPEAL FOR ANSWERS

It has been nearly one year since four-year-old Gus Lamont disappeared from his family’s remote South Australian property. He has never been found. Now, police are offering a reward of up to $1 million as his parents make an emotional plea for someone to finally come forward.

Gus Lamont was just four years old when he disappeared from Oak Park Station, a remote property near Yunta in South Australia, on September 27, 2025.

He was last seen playing outside near the family homestead.

According to police, Gus had been playing in the area before his grandmother, Josie Murray, called him in for dinner. When she went looking for him roughly half an hour after she had last seen him, he was gone.

His disappearance immediately triggered a massive search operation involving police, emergency services, Aboriginal trackers, volunteers, aircraft, drones and specialist teams.

But despite one of the largest and most intensive missing-child searches ever undertaken by South Australia Police, Gus has still not been found.

Now, almost a year later, investigators are making another major push for information.

On September 23, South Australian authorities announced a reward of up to A$1 million for information that leads to the conviction of the person or people responsible for Gus’s disappearance and/or the recovery of his remains.

Detective Superintendent Darren Fielke, of the Major Crime Investigation Branch, said the reward represented a significant step in the investigation.

He urged anyone who knows something about what happened to Gus to come forward.

“Someone must know something,” South Australian Police Minister Michael Brown said.

GUS’ PARENTS SPEAK OUT

The latest development also marked the first time Gus’s parents, Jess and Josh Lamont, had spoken publicly in a direct video appeal.

Their message was heartbreaking.

Jess described Gus as a “beautiful, sweet and unique little boy” who loved music, listening to stories and playing in nature.

She said he had been growing up in an environment she treasured and had a bright future ahead of him.

But all of that changed when he disappeared.

“Every single day without him has been incredibly difficult,” Jess said in the family’s video message.

The passing of time has made the family’s pain even harder.

During the year Gus has been missing, he should have celebrated his fifth birthday.

His younger brother also celebrated his first birthday without him.

Jess said one of the most heartbreaking parts of the situation was knowing that the two brothers would never get the chance to grow up together if Gus is not found.

“Gus was adored by his little brother,” she said.

Josh also appealed directly to anyone who may have information, emphasizing that even something that might seem insignificant could help investigators.

“We miss Gus more than we can describe,” Josh said.

“We are desperate to have him return home to us and we are desperate for answers.”

THE SEARCH HAS BEEN MASSIVE

South Australia Police have described the investigation as one of the largest and most intensive missing-person operations they have ever undertaken.

Task Force Horizon conducted 11 separate ground searches over 30 days, alongside extensive aerial searches using PolAir helicopters, drones and aircraft equipped with specialist camera systems.

Earlier in the investigation, more than 160 SAPOL personnel and hundreds of additional resources were involved in the search.

Police searched an enormous area surrounding Oak Park Station, including difficult outback terrain and locations that investigators believed could potentially provide answers.

Nearby water sources were also investigated.

Yet no trace of Gus has been found.

In February 2026, police formally declared the disappearance a major crime after months of investigation and searches.

Investigators have also conducted detailed examinations of aerial imagery.

Detective Superintendent Fielke said investigators recently carried out a painstaking manual review of aerial images in addition to previous artificial-intelligence analysis.

That work identified several “anomalies”, although police have not publicly disclosed details that could compromise the investigation.

POLICE DO NOT BELIEVE GUS SIMPLY WANDERED AWAY

One of the most significant aspects of the investigation is what police say they do not believe happened.

After extensive searches, investigators said there was no evidence indicating that Gus simply wandered away from the family property.

Police have also investigated the possibility that an unknown person abducted him.

But investigators say they have found no evidence supporting that theory either.

Instead, police have repeatedly said their focus remains on the possibility that someone known to Gus was involved in his disappearance and suspected death.

Police have previously identified one of Gus’s grandparents as a person of interest in the investigation.

That person has maintained their innocence.

Detective Superintendent Fielke confirmed on September 23 that the situation had not changed, but declined to provide further details about the person being investigated.

No body has been recovered, and no one has been publicly charged in connection with Gus’s disappearance.

A GRANDMOTHER’S DIFFERENT THEORY

Gus’s grandmother, Josie Murray, has continued to reject the suggestion that she was responsible for his disappearance.

In recent interviews, she has said she believes Gus may have been abducted and has expressed frustration over what she considers to be excessive focus on her.

She has even suggested that investigators should examine the possibility — which she herself acknowledged was highly unlikely — that a wedge-tailed eagle could have carried the child away.

Police, however, have said there is currently no evidence supporting an abduction by a stranger.

A YEAR WITHOUT ANSWERS

For Gus’s parents, the anniversary is not simply a date on the calendar.

It marks an entire year of birthdays, family moments and milestones that their son should have experienced.

Instead, they have spent 12 months wondering what happened to him.

Jess said the family continues to hope that someone will provide the information needed to bring Gus home.

The parents’ message was simple: if you know anything, no matter how small or insignificant it may seem, tell police.

Investigators have emphasized that information can be provided anonymously through Crime Stoppers.

The A$1 million reward is available for information that leads to a conviction of the person or people responsible for Gus’s disappearance and/or the recovery of his remains.

Almost one year after the little boy vanished from the Australian outback, the central question remains unanswered:

Where is Gus Lamont?

His parents are still waiting.

And they are hoping that somewhere, someone has the answer that can finally bring their son home.
