JAY SLATER’S DYING MOMENTS REVEALED AS MUM FINALLY LEARNS THE TRUTH ABOUT HIS DEATH

Jay Slater’s mother has finally been given a clearer picture of what happened to her son in the moments after his fatal fall in Tenerife — including whether the 19-year-old suffered before he died.

More than two years after Jay disappeared during a holiday in Tenerife, his mother Debbie Duncan has returned to the island to retrace his final journey and confront some of the questions that have continued to haunt her.

The emotional journey forms part of a new Channel 5 documentary, Cause of Death, which examines Jay’s final hours and the evidence surrounding his death.

“IT WAS THE END — THERE WAS NO PAIN AND SUFFERING”

One of the most difficult questions Debbie has carried since Jay’s death has been whether her son was conscious or in pain after falling into the ravine.

In the documentary, forensic pathologist Dr Richard Shepherd, who carried out the Home Office post-mortem examination, explains the severity of Jay’s injuries.

According to Dr Shepherd, Jay suffered such severe head trauma that the injury would probably have killed him almost immediately.

He told The Sun that although the circumstances surrounding the fall were horrific, the severity of the head injury meant there was unlikely to have been a prolonged period of pain or suffering.

For Debbie, the explanation provided a painful but important piece of information about her son’s final moments.

JAY DISAPPEARED AFTER A NIGHT OUT

Jay, a 19-year-old apprentice bricklayer from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, disappeared in the early hours of June 17, 2024 while on holiday in Tenerife.

He had been attending the NRG music festival and later went to an Airbnb in the remote mountain village of Masca with two men he had met while on holiday.

Jay eventually left the property alone.

He attempted to make his way back toward the area where he was staying, but the mountainous terrain proved extremely difficult to navigate.

During a phone call with his friend Lucy Law, Jay said he was lost, had very little battery remaining and had no water.

The call ended after he said his phone had only around 1% battery remaining.

HIS PHONE BECAME ONE OF THE KEY PIECES OF EVIDENCE

Jay’s phone was eventually recovered near his body.

Digital investigators examined its activity, including its final location and records of movement.

The device recorded a significant number of steps and changes in elevation during the period before Jay disappeared.

In the new documentary, digital forensic scientist Dr Angus Marshall examines the phone with Debbie, helping her understand what it can reveal about her son’s final journey.

For Debbie, seeing the evidence was deeply emotional.

She had spent years wondering what Jay experienced after leaving the Airbnb and why he did not simply turn around.

“WHY DID YOU NOT JUST TURN BACK?”

As she retraces the route, Debbie struggles with the difficult terrain Jay encountered.

At one point, she asks:

“What were you thinking, Jay? Why did you not just turn back?”

She later reflects that, after seeing the landscape herself, Jay may have become frightened and felt unable to return to the road.

The journey has also forced Debbie to confront feelings of guilt over decisions she made during the morning Jay disappeared.

She recalled seeing a Snapchat post from her son and wondering at the time why she had not called him.

She has since said she knows she could not have predicted what was about to happen.

JAY’S BODY WAS FOUND 29 DAYS LATER

Jay’s disappearance triggered a huge search operation across Tenerife.

His body was discovered on July 15, 2024, 29 days after he vanished.

Spanish authorities found him in a remote area of the Rural de Teno region, at the bottom of a ravine.

He had suffered catastrophic injuries consistent with a fall from height.

The later inquest in England concluded that Jay died after a heavy fall from height.

The finding was consistent with the conclusion that his death was a tragic accident.

DEBBIE WAS SHOWN PHOTOS OF HER SON

One of the most painful moments came after Jay’s body was recovered.

When Debbie travelled back to Tenerife to collect her son’s phone and deal with legal paperwork, she was unexpectedly shown photographs of Jay’s body.

She later described the experience as a moment when she felt as though “my heart was going to stop beating.”

Despite the shock, she said the images confirmed something she had been desperately waiting to know — that the person found in the ravine was truly her son.

THE QUESTIONS THAT STILL HAUNT THE FAMILY

Jay’s disappearance generated enormous attention online, with numerous theories circulating about what might have happened to him.

Debbie has repeatedly spoken about the impact those theories had on her family.

She has said that people made accusations and spread claims about Jay and his family despite not knowing them.

The intense online speculation continued even after the inquest concluded that Jay died following a fall.

The new documentary therefore focuses on the available evidence rather than the internet theories that surrounded the case.

WHAT HAPPENED BEFORE JAY’S FINAL FALL?

The investigation established a broad timeline of Jay’s final hours.

He travelled to the remote area of Masca after leaving the nightlife area of southern Tenerife.

He later left the Airbnb and attempted to return.

He made his final phone call to Lucy Law and was subsequently reported missing.

His body was found almost a month later.

The inquest heard that there was no evidence of injuries suggesting that Jay had been assaulted or restrained against his will.

His toxicology results also showed traces of several substances, although the evidence did not establish exactly when they had been consumed or what precise effect they had at the time of the fall.

A MOTHER STILL SEARCHING FOR ANSWERS

For Debbie, returning to Tenerife has been about more than revisiting the place where her son died.

It has been an attempt to understand his final journey as a mother who never got the chance to say goodbye.

Walking through the same mountainous terrain, examining Jay’s phone records and hearing a forensic specialist explain the injuries have given her information she had been searching for since June 2024.

But understanding what happened does not make the loss any easier.

As she lays flowers near the area where Jay was found, Debbie continues to grieve the son she described as her beloved boy.

Jay was 19 when he died. His family has now spent more than two years trying to understand the final moments of his life — and the new documentary gives his mother one of the answers she had been desperate to hear: that the catastrophic head injury he suffered was likely fatal almost immediately.
