A 30-YEAR-OLD FATHER LOST HIS LIFE AFTER A CONFRONTATION IN BURLEY IN WHARFEDALE — AND HIS FAMILY SAY THEY HAVE BEEN GIVEN A “LIFE SENTENCE” OF THEIR OWN
What began with an argument at a property in Burley in Wharfedale ended with a 30-year-old father dying in hospital.
Mason Jones, from Bournemouth, was stabbed in the stomach shortly before 10am on March 1, 2026, on Iron Row, just off Main Street.
He was taken to hospital but died later that afternoon.
Months later, the criminal case has ended with a 17-year prison sentence — but for Mason’s family, the pain of losing him will continue for the rest of their lives.
A CONFRONTATION THAT TURNED DEADLY
The court heard that John Robinson, 30, of Derry Hill in Menston, was asked to attend the property after an argument had taken place there.
Robinson arrived carrying a knife.
During the confrontation, Mason was stabbed in the stomach.
The circumstances surrounding the confrontation were examined during Robinson’s trial, where he faced a murder charge.
The jury ultimately cleared him of murder but found him guilty of manslaughter.
He was also convicted of possessing a bladed article in a public place.
MASON COULD NOT BE SAVED
Mason suffered a serious stab wound and was taken to hospital following the incident.
Despite efforts to save him, he died later that afternoon.
His death left behind children who would now have to grow up without their father.
When the case first emerged in March, Mason’s family described him as someone whose life had been taken “far too soon” and spoke of his infectious smile and joyful spirit.
HIS FAMILY’S “LIFE SENTENCE”
Following Robinson’s conviction, Mason’s family released a deeply emotional statement.
They said the conviction could never bring Mason back.
“Today’s conviction does not bring our Mason back. We have been given a life sentence.”
They described Mason as a loving son, brother, father, partner and friend, remembering his big heart, smile and cheeky personality.
His children, they said, would grow up without their dad — but the family would make sure they knew how deeply he loved them.
They also said they wanted Mason to be remembered for the person he was, rather than the way he was taken from them.
17 YEARS BEHIND BARS
On September 25, 2026, Robinson was sentenced to 17 years in prison for manslaughter.
West Yorkshire Police said Robinson had armed himself with a knife and used it during the confrontation.
Detective Inspector Hannah Dixon, from the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, said the force’s thoughts remained with Mason’s family and loved ones.
She described the incident as having had a devastating impact on the family and said the case demonstrated the dangers of carrying a knife into a confrontation.
A FAMILY LEFT TO REMEMBER HIM
For Mason’s loved ones, the conclusion of the trial marks the end of one chapter — but not the end of their grief.
His family said his children will carry a part of him with them as they grow up.
They also thanked the homicide investigation team for supporting them through what they described as some of the hardest days of their lives.
Mason was 30 years old.
He was a father, a partner, a son, a brother and a friend.
His family says he will always be loved, forever missed and never forgotten.
