THE VOICE UK ENTERS A NEW ERA — TOM JONES FANS REACT AS ICONIC COACH LEAVES THE RED CHAIR
The Voice UK is entering one of its biggest shake-ups yet — and fans are still coming to terms with the absence of Sir Tom Jones.
After more than a decade of unforgettable moments in the famous red chair, the legendary Welsh singer will no longer serve as a full-time coach when the show returns for its 15th series in 2027.
The change has sparked an emotional reaction from viewers, with a petition calling for Tom Jones to return attracting tens of thousands of signatures from supporters around the world.
And now, the campaign has received an unexpected boost from someone who knows the show better than almost anyone — will.i.am.
TOM JONES’ VOICE UK JOURNEY COMES TO A TURNING POINT
Tom Jones first joined The Voice UK when the programme launched in 2012.
Although his appearances as a coach have varied over the years, he became one of the show’s most recognisable faces.
Across his time on the programme, Jones worked alongside a long list of major music stars, including Jessie J, Kylie Minogue, Rita Ora, Olly Murs, will.i.am and Kelly Rowland.
He also coached contestants who went on to win the competition, helping cement his place in the show’s history.
But the 86-year-old singer revealed earlier this month that he did not choose to leave the programme.
Jones said ITV had made the decision and told his followers that the broadcaster had cited financial difficulties connected to insurance.
He also said he had been offered a significantly reduced role rather than remaining involved from the beginning of the series.
ITV, meanwhile, described the changes as part of a new coaching line-up and thanked Jones for the “countless incredible and unforgettable moments” he had given the programme.
A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT RED-CHAIR LINE-UP
For 2027, the coaching panel will look very different.
Cheryl and rapper Aitch will join the programme for the first time as coaches, while will.i.am and Kelly Rowland will return.
The changes also mean the departure of McFly stars Tom Fletcher and Danny Jones from the coaching panel.
Behind the scenes, the presenting team is changing too.
Stacey Solomon and Alesha Dixon will take over presenting duties from Emma Willis, who is moving to Strictly Come Dancing.
It is therefore not simply a replacement for one coach.
The entire programme is entering a new chapter.
FANS ARE NOT READY TO SAY GOODBYE
The announcement has triggered a major fan campaign calling for Tom Jones to be reinstated.
The petition was launched by superfan Aaron Howlett, who has described Jones as one of the last great living legends of British music.
Within days, the campaign had attracted more than 60,000 signatures, with supporters joining from the UK and overseas.
Some supporters have said that Tom’s presence was one of the reasons they watched the programme.
Others have focused on his long association with the show and the connection he developed with contestants and viewers.
The campaign does not mean ITV has agreed to reverse its decision, but it demonstrates how strongly some viewers feel about the change.
THEN WILL.I.AM ENTERED THE CONVERSATION
The campaign gained another burst of attention when will.i.am publicly backed the petition.
The pair have shared the coaching panel for years, making the development particularly notable.
Will.i.am collaborated on a social-media post promoting the petition calling for Tom Jones to return to The Voice UK.
The support has added another emotional layer to the transition.
While Tom Jones will not be returning as a full-time coach for series 15, ITV has previously indicated that discussions with Jones and his team about possible involvement in the next series were continuing.
That leaves open the possibility of some form of future appearance, although no full-time return has been confirmed.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
The new series is expected to bring an entirely different dynamic to the famous red chairs.
Cheryl brings her experience from Girls Aloud and years in the music and television industries.
Aitch will make his coaching debut, joining two returning figures in will.i.am and Kelly Rowland.
Meanwhile, the arrival of Stacey Solomon and Alesha Dixon will give the programme a new presenting partnership.
For longtime viewers, however, one question will remain:
What will The Voice UK feel like without Tom Jones sitting in his red chair?
The programme is moving forward, but his years on the show have already become part of its history.
And with will.i.am now supporting the campaign for his return, the conversation surrounding Tom Jones’ departure is unlikely to disappear anytime soon.
Whether ITV ultimately brings the legendary singer back in some capacity remains to be seen.
For now, The Voice UK is preparing for a new era — while thousands of fans continue to look back at the man whose unmistakable voice and personality became synonymous with the show.
