NEWBORN BABY MARIA SKOPOVA NAMED AS INQUEST REVEALS 33 WOUNDS IN SHEFFIELD CASE

A newborn baby girl who died on the day she was born in Sheffield has now been formally identified as Maria Skopova, as an inquest hears new details about the circumstances surrounding her death.

Maria was born on August 30, 2026, at a property in Holywell Heights in the Wincobank area of Sheffield, England.

She had previously been referred to in court proceedings only as “Baby S”.

At the opening of her inquest at Sheffield’s Medico-Legal Centre, Senior Coroner Tanyka Rawden formally identified the infant as Maria Skopova and confirmed that emergency services had attended the property before paramedics pronounced her dead.

The inquest has now been adjourned until March 25, 2027, while criminal proceedings against four adults continue.

Maria died on the same day she was born.

According to information previously presented to the courts, her mother, Andrea Skopova, 20, had given birth at around 37 weeks.

The circumstances surrounding the birth later led medical staff to contact police after concerns were raised about the newborn’s whereabouts.

Officers went to the Holywell Heights property, where the baby was found inside an outhouse.

Earlier court hearings heard that Maria had been wrapped in a towel and placed inside a blue bag on top of a washing machine.

Emergency workers attended the address, but Maria could not be saved.

A forensic post-mortem examination subsequently established that her death resulted from stab wounds.

The latest inquest hearing heard that Maria suffered 33 wounds from 15 separate stabbing incidents.

The details were previously presented during court proceedings and have now formed part of the information surrounding the coroner’s investigation.

Because criminal proceedings are active, the inquest has been paused while the prosecution case moves forward.

The coroner said she would review the evidence gathered so far before deciding how the inquest should proceed when it resumes in March.

FOUR ADULTS FACE MURDER CHARGES

Four adults have been charged in connection with Maria’s death.

They are:

  • Andrea Skopova, 20
  • Peter Horvath Jr., 19
  • Peter Horvath Sr., 38
  • Nina Horvathova, 37

The four are accused of murder.

They also face charges relating to causing or allowing the death of a child and perverting the course of justice.

Prosecutors allege that steps were taken to conceal what had happened to the newborn.

A 15-year-old girl has separately been charged with perverting the course of justice. She cannot legally be identified because of her age.

All of the defendants remain entitled to a fair trial, and the allegations against them have not been proven in court.

The Crown Prosecution Service has specifically reminded the public that bringing charges is not a finding of guilt.

THE COURT HEARD HOW THE BABY WAS DISCOVERED

During an earlier hearing at Sheffield Magistrates’ Court, prosecutors outlined some of the circumstances surrounding the discovery.

The court heard that medical staff became concerned after establishing that the baby was no longer in the womb.

Police were contacted shortly after 5 a.m., and officers went to the Holywell Heights property.

The newborn was subsequently discovered in an outhouse.

Investigators then began working to establish what had happened between Maria’s birth and the moment emergency services arrived.

South Yorkshire Police said detectives had been working to piece together the events surrounding the baby’s death and urged people not to speculate publicly about the case while the legal process continues.

MARIA’S MOTHER AMONG THOSE ACCUSED

Andrea Skopova, 20, is accused of murdering her newborn daughter.

She appeared at Sheffield Crown Court alongside Peter Horvath Jr., Peter Horvath Sr. and Nina Horvathova.

At an earlier hearing, the court heard that Horvath Jr. was Skopova’s boyfriend but was not believed to be Maria’s father.

The four adults are all Slovakian nationals, according to court reporting.

During their September court appearance, family members watched from the public gallery, while Skopova and the 15-year-old girl were reported to have been visibly distressed.

The defendants were remanded in custody.

FLOWERS LEFT OUTSIDE THE HOME

As investigators continued their work, members of the community left flowers and other tributes close to the property on Holywell Heights.

The scene became a quiet reminder of the newborn at the centre of the investigation, while police continued gathering evidence.

South Yorkshire Police appealed for people to allow the investigation and court process to proceed without speculation or online commentary that could potentially affect the case.

TRIAL EXPECTED TO LAST UP TO SEVEN WEEKS

The four adults accused of murder are due to stand trial at Sheffield Crown Court.

The trial is currently scheduled to begin on April 12, 2027, and is expected to last approximately six to seven weeks.

The criminal case will take place before the inquest resumes.

The coroner has adjourned Maria’s inquest until March 25, 2027, when the evidence collected so far will be reviewed and a decision will be made about the next stage of the proceedings.

A CASE THAT HAS SHOCKED SHEFFIELD

Maria Skopova’s death has shocked the Wincobank community and drawn widespread attention across the UK.

She was born on August 30 and died before she had the opportunity to begin her life.

Now, her name is no longer simply “Baby S.”

She has been formally identified as Maria Skopova, and the investigation into the circumstances of her short life continues through both the criminal courts and the coroner’s process.

For now, the central questions surrounding Maria’s death remain before the courts.

Four adults face murder charges, while another teenager faces a separate allegation. None has been convicted.

The full circumstances will ultimately be examined during the criminal proceedings scheduled for next year.

Maria was only a newborn, but her name is now at the centre of a major investigation that has left a Sheffield community searching for answers.
