PROVING COMMITMENT FIRST: THE 39-YEAR LOVE STORY OF MADS MIKKELSEN AND HANNE JACOBSEN

Mads Mikkelsen and Hanne Jacobsen were together for 13 years before they decided to get married. By then, they had already built most of the life people usually promise each other at an altar.

They met in 1987 while working as dancers in Denmark. Hanne became a choreographer, while Mads spent years as a professional dancer before transitioning to acting. Their daughter, Viola, was born in 1992, followed by their son, Carl, in 1997. Only in December 2000 did Mads and Hanne officially tie the knot.

When asked why they waited so long, Mads gave a practical answer: having children together was already a far greater declaration of love than getting married. When they later bought a house, marriage simply made practical sense.

By that point, Mads was building the acting career that would take him far beyond Denmark—from Pusher to Casino Royale, Hannibal, The Hunt, and Another Round. Through every stage, Hanne remained by his side, understanding that his work would often take him abroad. Their relationship adapted seamlessly to that reality.

Today, they have been together for nearly 39 years—13 years before their wedding and nearly 26 years after. They became parents before becoming husband and wife, navigated major career changes, raised two children, and later became grandparents.

For Mads and Hanne, the wedding was not the beginning of their commitment; it happened after they had already spent over a decade proving it. Does the time spent before a wedding tell us more about a relationship than the ceremony itself?
