COUPLE SENTENCED TO LIFE AFTER VULNERABLE MAN DIED FOLLOWING MONTHS OF ABUSE

Kenneth Newton and Melanie James have both been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of 28-year-old Rubin Blount, a vulnerable man who was supposed to be in their care.

At Stafford Crown Court on September 25, 2026, Mrs Justice Jefford sentenced both defendants to a minimum term of 21 years.

The couple had been convicted of murder following a six-week trial, with the jury reaching its verdict in July.

Rubin Blount was described in court as a particularly vulnerable man with significant learning difficulties who could not live independently.

He was living with his stepbrother, Kenneth Newton, and Newton’s partner, Melanie James, at a property in Tamworth, Staffordshire.

Instead of receiving the care and protection he needed, prosecutors said Rubin was subjected to prolonged physical and emotional abuse.

The court heard that he was repeatedly denied adequate food and drink, forced to stand for extended periods and left without proper medical attention.

He was also made to eat from rubbish bins and was sometimes left in deeply unhygienic conditions.

His Condition Had Become Extremely Serious

Rubin was taken to hospital after becoming seriously unwell in November 2022.

He weighed only 40 kilograms and was suffering from severe malnutrition and dehydration.

Doctors discovered extensive injuries, including fractures to his ribs and spine, as well as pneumonia and a serious infection.

He suffered a cardiac arrest after arriving at hospital. Although doctors resuscitated him, he remained critically ill and died three days later, on November 30, 2022.

Staffordshire Police said their investigation found that Rubin had suffered 50 rib fractures, with 47 occurring during the weeks before his death.

One of the most disturbing aspects of the case was the existence of videos recorded by Newton and James themselves.

The footage was shown to the jury during the trial and demonstrated how Rubin was mocked and mistreated while he was in an extremely weakened condition.

According to the judge, recordings made on November 2, 2022 showed Rubin appearing extremely frail and unable to defend himself or simply walk away.

The court heard that the couple mocked his appearance and physical condition rather than seeking the medical help he desperately needed.

Prosecutors described Rubin’s death as the culmination of a prolonged course of conduct against someone who was unable to speak up for himself.

The Judge Said A Position Of Trust Had Been Abused

During sentencing, Mrs Justice Jefford said both defendants had been in a position of trust and had failed to help Rubin while he was suffering.

She said the evidence showed repeated violence and a failure to provide the care and assistance he required.

The court also heard that the couple attempted to portray Rubin as responsible for some of his own injuries and made allegations about his behaviour.

The judge rejected those explanations, saying the defendants had attempted to create an impression that Rubin was regularly hurting himself.

Both Newton and James will serve at least 21 years in prison before they can be considered for release.

Rubin’s Family Says His Life Mattered

For Rubin’s family, the sentence cannot undo what happened.

His mother, Jeanette Blount, delivered a heartbreaking victim impact statement describing her son as much more than a victim.

She said Rubin was a son, brother and friend who was deeply loved by his family and people in his community.

The family had believed that Newton and James loved Rubin and would take care of him.

Instead, they were left facing a loss they said would stay with them for the rest of their lives.

Jeanette said Rubin deserved compassion, dignity and the opportunity to live his life.

Police Welcome The Sentences

Detective Chief Inspector Ian Fitzgerald of Staffordshire Police said the investigation had been extremely difficult for officers.

He said the suffering inflicted on Rubin was difficult to comprehend and described the condition in which he was found as deeply distressing.

Police said the case demonstrated the devastating consequences when a vulnerable person is placed in the care of people who fail to protect them.

Rubin’s death occurred in 2022, but the investigation and court proceedings have continued for years before the final sentencing in September 2026.

A Life That Should Have Been Protected

Rubin’s final months were marked by suffering, but his family wants his story to be remembered for more than the circumstances of his death.

He was a person who was loved, known and valued by others.

His mother’s words in court were a reminder that behind every case is a family left to carry the consequences long after the courtroom falls silent.

Newton and James will now spend at least 21 years in prison for Rubin’s murder.

For Rubin’s family, however, no sentence can bring him back.

His life mattered.

And those who loved him say they will continue to remember him as a son, a brother and a friend — not simply as the vulnerable man at the centre of a terrible crime.
