TOM JONES LEAVES THE VOICE UK AS ITV UNVEILS MAJOR 2027 SHAKE-UP
Tom Jones is set to leave his famous red chair on The Voice UK as ITV prepares for a major shake-up — but the legendary singer has made it clear he never wanted to go.
The 86-year-old Welsh music icon will not return as a full-time coach when the singing competition comes back for its 15th series in 2027.
Instead, ITV has announced a completely revamped coaching line-up featuring Cheryl and Aitch, alongside returning coaches will.i.am and Kelly Rowland.
The news has sparked an emotional reaction from fans, with a petition calling for Tom to return attracting more than 60,000 signatures. His longtime fellow coach will.i.am has also publicly backed the campaign.
TOM JONES SAYS HE DID NOT WANT TO LEAVE
Tom addressed the shock decision himself after ITV announced the new line-up.
The singer said he loved The Voice UK and wanted to continue working on the show.
According to Tom, ITV had made the decision to remove him from the full-time coaching panel and only told him about it shortly before the announcement.
He also said he had been told that insurance costs and financial difficulties were part of the reason behind the decision.
Tom claimed ITV later described the changes as a wider “refresh” of the programme.
He said he had been offered a smaller role that would allow him to make an appearance on the show, but without being involved from the beginning in the same way as a full-time coach.
For the veteran singer, that was clearly not the same thing.
ITV THANKS THE MUSIC LEGEND
ITV took a different tone when announcing the new line-up.
The broadcaster described Tom as “irreplaceable” and thanked him for his years on The Voice UK, praising the memorable moments he created for both audiences and contestants.
ITV also thanked Emma Willis, Tom Fletcher and Danny Jones, who are all leaving the programme ahead of the 2027 series.
A show spokesperson has also said Tom will no longer be a full-time coach but that ITV remains in discussions with him and his team about possible involvement in the next series.
That means his relationship with the programme may not necessarily be completely over.
FANS ARE FIGHTING TO BRING HIM BACK
Tom’s departure quickly triggered a major reaction from viewers.
Superfan Aaron Howlett launched an online petition calling on ITV to reinstate the singer.
The campaign attracted more than 63,000 signatures by late September, with supporters arguing that Tom’s experience, warmth and connection with contestants were an important part of the show’s identity.
And one of the biggest names from the programme has joined the campaign.
will.i.am shared the petition, giving the movement another boost and showing that the issue has not simply disappeared after ITV’s announcement.
For many longtime viewers, Tom is not simply another coach.
He has been one of the faces most closely associated with the programme.
TOM HAS BEEN PART OF THE SHOW SINCE THE BEGINNING
Tom’s history with The Voice UK stretches back to the programme’s earliest days.
He first appeared as a coach when the format launched in Britain in 2012.
Although he was an on-and-off coach over the years, his distinctive personality, decades of musical experience and interactions with contestants made him one of the show’s most recognizable figures.
Over the years, Tom has shared the coaching panel with major stars including will.i.am, Jessie J, Kylie Minogue, Rita Ora, Olly Murs and Kelly Rowland.
He also mentored several contestants who eventually won the competition.
A NEW ERA FOR THE VOICE UK
The 2027 season will look very different.
Cheryl and Aitch will make their coaching debuts, joining returning stars Kelly Rowland and will.i.am.
Behind the scenes, there will also be a new presenting team.
Alesha Dixon and Stacey Solomon will take over hosting duties for Series 15.
ITV says the new line-up is designed to bring fresh energy to the programme while continuing its search for Britain’s next major singing talent.
But with Tom Jones gone from the main coaching panel, the biggest question may be whether longtime viewers will embrace the new era.
THE BACKLASH IS ALREADY UNDERWAY
The announcement has divided viewers.
Some fans are excited about Cheryl and Aitch joining the famous red chairs.
Others believe removing Tom means removing one of the show’s most important links to its history.
The petition demonstrates just how strongly some viewers feel about the decision.
Tom’s own comments have added another layer to the controversy because he has made clear that he did not choose to walk away.
That distinction matters.
This was not simply a veteran star deciding that it was time for a new chapter.
According to Tom, he wanted to remain part of the programme.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT FOR TOM?
For now, Tom’s future on The Voice UK remains slightly open.
ITV has officially confirmed that he will not be a full-time coach for Series 15, but the broadcaster says discussions are continuing about whether he could have another role.
Meanwhile, the petition continues to gather support.
The current series still features Tom as a coach, meaning viewers will have at least one more opportunity to see the legendary singer in his familiar red chair before the new line-up takes over.
After more than a decade connected to one of Britain’s biggest televised singing competitions, Tom Jones is facing an unexpected goodbye.
And judging by the reaction from fans — and now from will.i.am — this may not be the last chapter of Tom Jones and The Voice UK.
