NEWBORN BABY FOUND DEAD AFTER BIRTH — 15 SEPARATE STABBINGS REVEALED IN HEARTBREAKING SHEFFIELD CASE

A NEWBORN GIRL’S LIFE ENDS ON THE DAY SHE WAS BORN

A heartbreaking case in Sheffield has left a community struggling to understand how a newborn baby could lose her life just hours after entering the world.

The baby girl, now publicly identified as Maria Skopova, was found dead at a property on Holywell Heights in the Wincobank area of Sheffield on August 30.

Emergency services had been called following concerns about the safety of an infant. Despite efforts by police officers and paramedics, the baby was pronounced dead at the scene.

A forensic post-mortem later confirmed that Maria died from stab wounds.

The disturbing extent of Maria’s injuries was revealed during earlier court proceedings.

Prosecutors told the court that the newborn had suffered 33 wounds from 15 separate stabbings.

She was found inside an outbuilding at the Holywell Heights property, wrapped in a towel and placed inside a blue bag.

The details have shocked the local community, with flowers and tributes later appearing near the property.

FOUR ADULTS ACCUSED OF MURDER

Four adults have been charged with Maria’s murder.

They are Andrea Skopova, 20; Peter Horvath Jr, 19; Peter Horvath Sr, 38; and Nina Horvathova, 37.

All four are also charged with causing or allowing the death of a child and perverting the course of justice by allegedly taking steps to conceal the infant’s death.

A 15-year-old girl, who cannot legally be named, has separately been charged with perverting the course of justice.

None of the defendants entered pleas at the latest Sheffield Crown Court hearing on October 2. All were remanded in custody.

Andrea Skopova, 20, is identified by prosecutors as Maria’s mother.

The court previously heard that Peter Horvath Jr, Skopova’s boyfriend, is not believed to be Maria’s biological father. The identity of the biological father has not been established publicly.

The case remains before the courts, and prosecutors have stressed that the defendants have the right to a fair trial.

POLICE URGE PEOPLE NOT TO SPECULATE

South Yorkshire Police have repeatedly urged the public not to speculate about the circumstances surrounding Maria’s death or share unverified information online.

Detective Chief Inspector Tom Woodward described the investigation as complex and said the force remained committed to pursuing justice for the baby.

The Crown Prosecution Service has likewise emphasized that the charges are allegations and that guilt can only be determined by a court.

A COMMUNITY LEFT HEARTBROKEN

For many people in Sheffield, Maria’s death has become a deeply painful reminder of how vulnerable a newborn child can be.

Flowers and small tributes have been left near the Holywell Heights property as the investigation and court proceedings continue.

Behind the headlines and courtroom charges was a baby girl who had only just entered the world.

Her life had barely begun.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

A further hearing has been scheduled for December 14, 2026, while a provisional trial is set to begin on April 12, 2027 and is expected to last six to seven weeks.

An inquest into Maria’s death has also been opened and adjourned until March 25, 2027 while the criminal proceedings continue.

Maria’s story has left a community grieving — and a courtroom preparing to examine the unanswered questions surrounding the final hours of a newborn baby’s life.
