SHE WAS THE HEART OF HER FAMILY — DANIELLE O’KEANE’S FINAL JOURNEY AFTER A WESTLIFE CONCERT

A NIGHT THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE FILLED WITH MUSIC AND MEMORIES ENDED IN HEARTBREAK FOR A NEWRY FAMILY

Danielle O’Keane was supposed to be enjoying a rare night out with friends.

The 37-year-old mother of two had travelled from Newry to Dublin to see Westlife perform at the 3Arena on September 26.

Instead, the night ended with a devastating road collision that would leave her family fighting for hope — before receiving the heartbreaking news days later.

Danielle died in hospital on October 1, leaving behind her husband, Dave, and their two young sons, Caolán and Cillian.

After the Westlife concert, Danielle and friends were travelling by motorised rickshaw from the 3Arena toward Dublin city centre.

They were heading to meet Danielle’s husband and the partners of the other women when the crash happened on North Wall Quay at around 11pm.

Gardaí said a woman in her 30s was struck by a vehicle and brought by ambulance to the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital with serious injuries.

Danielle was later confirmed to be the woman involved.

Reports said the rickshaw hit a kerb or divider and overturned. Danielle was thrown from the vehicle and fell into the path of an approaching car.

The exact circumstances remain under investigation.

Danielle suffered a devastating brain injury and was taken to intensive care, where she remained on a ventilator.

Her family spent days hoping for a different outcome.

Her brother-in-law described her as someone who was “full of life, full of energy” and had a “heart of gold.”

She was only 37.

And there was so much waiting for her at home.

Danielle and Dave had been preparing for a family holiday to Mallorca with their two boys. Their bags were already packed, with the trip planned for October 5.

Instead of boarding a flight together, her family was left preparing to say goodbye.

A MOTHER, A WIFE — AND SO MUCH MORE

Danielle was remembered not simply as the woman at the centre of a tragic news story, but as a wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend.

Her death notice described her as the much-loved wife of Dave and mother of Caolán and Cillian.

She was also the beloved daughter of Michael and Pauline and sister to Barry and her twin brother Sean.

Friends and relatives have continued sharing memories of the woman they knew before her name appeared in headlines.

For those closest to her, Danielle was someone whose absence cannot be measured simply by the circumstances of her death.

WESTLIFE HEARD ABOUT THE FAMILY’S HEARTBREAK

As news of Danielle’s condition spread, Westlife were reportedly in contact with her family.

After her death, the band paid tribute to her during their concert at the Utilita Arena in Newcastle.

Before performing “Flying Without Wings,” Nicky Byrne addressed the crowd and expressed the group’s sympathy to Danielle’s family.

Then Shane Filan dedicated “You Raise Me Up” to Danielle and to others who had lost someone they loved.

For a family grieving an unimaginable loss, the gesture offered a deeply emotional moment of remembrance.

The songs Danielle had gone to Dublin to hear became part of the story her loved ones will now remember forever.

GARDAÍ ARE STILL LOOKING FOR ANSWERS

While Danielle’s family mourns, Gardaí continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.

Investigators are appealing to anyone who was travelling around North Wall Quay between 10:30pm and 11:15pm on September 26.

They are particularly interested in anyone with dashcam or other camera footage that could help establish what happened.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Store Street Garda Station, the Garda Confidential Line, or any Garda station.

A FAMILY LEFT WITH AN EMPTY PLACE AT HOME

A fundraiser has also been established to support Danielle’s family following the tragedy.

The response has been enormous, with donations reaching well into six figures within days as people across Ireland and beyond rallied around the family.

But no amount of money can replace a mother.

No tribute can bring back a wife.

And for Caolán and Cillian, there will now be memories of a mother who was taken from their lives far too soon.

Danielle left home for what should have been a joyful night of music with friends.

She never made it home.

Now, her family and investigators are left with memories, unanswered questions — and a community determined to make sure she is remembered for the life she lived, not only the tragedy that ended it.

Danielle O’Keane was 37. She was a wife, a mother of two, a daughter, a sister and a friend.

And for the people who loved her, she will always be so much more than a headline.
