TRANSFORMING CRUELTY INTO A MESSAGE OF RESILIENCE AND HOPE
At 17 years old, Lizzie Velásquez opened YouTube and discovered a devastating eight-second video labeling her “The World’s Ugliest Woman.” Born with an extremely rare genetic condition that prevents her body from gaining weight, and blind in one eye, Lizzie was no stranger to feeling different. However, nothing prepared her for the millions of views and thousands of brutal comments left by total strangers. The overwhelming cruelty devastated her, causing her to question her self-worth and wish she could change her appearance.

Instead of letting anonymous hatred define her destiny, Lizzie made a monumental choice to reclaim her story. She pursued her education in communication and transformed her painful experience into a powerful catalyst for change. Becoming a renowned author, motivational speaker, and anti-bullying advocate, she turned her personal tragedy into a beacon of empowerment for others facing judgment and discrimination.
In 2013, Lizzie delivered a powerful TEDx talk centered around a defining question: “How do YOU define yourself?” The speech reached millions worldwide, creating a striking contrast: the very internet that once exposed her to extraordinary cruelty became the platform through which she spread messages of kindness, self-worth, and strength.

Lizzie could not control what strangers wrote about her, but she controlled how she responded. Her journey is ultimately not about physical appearance, but about identity and personal agency. By refusing to let others define her worth, she showed the world the true power of defining oneself.
