A SCARRED LEGACY: THE COURAGEOUS LESSON OF JACQUI SABURIDO
At just twenty years old, Jacqui Saburido moved to Texas filled with hope and dreams for a bright future. That promise was shattered on September 19, 1999, when a drunk driver struck the car she was riding in following a birthday celebration. The devastating head-on collision instantly claimed the lives of two friends. Jacqui survived, but she suffered catastrophic third-degree burns over sixty percent of her body, losing her hair, ears, eyelids, lips, and vision, alongside suffering severe loss of hand function.

Rather than hiding away, Jacqui made an extraordinarily brave decision. Supported by her dedicated father, Amadeo, she chose to become the global face of anti-drunk-driving campaigns. Her unedited photographs were featured on billboards, in television commercials, and throughout educational programs worldwide. She knew her appearance was shocking, but that stark reality was precisely her message: impaired driving destroys innocent lives in a matter of seconds.
Beyond her public advocacy, Jacqui demonstrated profound spiritual strength by publicly forgiving the teenage driver who caused the crash. She refused to let bitterness define her remaining years. For nearly two decades, she traveled widely to share her story and warn young people about the catastrophic consequences of driving under the influence.

Although Jacqui passed away from cancer in 2019 at the age of forty, her powerful legacy endures. Her extraordinary courage transformed unspeakable personal tragedy into a life-saving movement, reminding the world that one reckless decision behind the wheel can alter someone else’s destiny forever.
