SHE SHOULD HAVE BEEN BACK IN CLASS — 12-YEAR-OLD SOPHIA AITKEN REMEMBERED AS A “RAY OF SUNSHINE” AFTER FATAL DOUBLE-DECKER BUS CRASH
A community in Scotland has been left heartbroken after a 12-year-old schoolgirl lost her life in a tragic collision involving a double-decker bus during the school lunchtime break.
The young girl, identified as Sophia Aitken from Kilwinning, North Ayrshire, was involved in the collision on Lauchlan Way at approximately 1:10pm on Tuesday, November 3, 2026.
Emergency services were called to the scene after reports that a female pedestrian had been struck by a bus. Despite the response from emergency crews, Sophia was pronounced dead at the scene. Police confirmed that no other injuries were reported.
The incident prompted a major response, with the surrounding road closed while officers carried out investigations. Lauchlan Way was subsequently reopened after the police examination of the scene was completed.
But as details of the incident emerged, the focus of the community quickly turned from the circumstances of the collision to the young girl whose life had been lost.
HER FAMILY’S HEARTBREAKING TRIBUTE
Sophia’s family released an emotional statement through Police Scotland, describing their daughter as someone who brought happiness to everyone around her.
They said:
“We are devastated at the loss of our darling daughter Sophia. She was a ray of sunshine, and was loved by everyone who knew her.
“A light has gone out, and it will never return. We are comforted by the messages from the community. We would like to ask for privacy to grieve at this difficult time.”
Their words have touched many people, with messages of sympathy and support being shared throughout the local community.
A SCHOOL COMMUNITY LEFT DEVASTATED
Sophia was a pupil at Kilwinning Academy, where she was remembered as a popular and well-liked member of the school community.
A spokesperson for North Ayrshire Council paid tribute to the youngster, describing her as a girl with a “bright smile, vibrant personality and helpful nature”.
The council also acknowledged the enormous impact her loss would have on classmates, teachers and everyone who had known her.
In a statement, the spokesperson said that support and guidance would be made available to staff and pupils who needed it in the coming days, weeks and months.
The wider school community was described as devastated by the loss.
For those who shared classrooms, conversations and everyday school moments with Sophia, the news has brought an unimaginable sense of sadness. A familiar face will no longer be there, and a place in the school community has been left empty.
POLICE CONTINUE THEIR INVESTIGATION
Police Scotland confirmed that enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the collision remain ongoing.
Sergeant Stewart Taylor expressed his condolences to Sophia’s family and friends, as well as everyone affected by the incident.
He also thanked witnesses who had already come forward and those who assisted at the scene.
Officers are continuing to appeal for anyone with relevant information or dashcam footage that has not yet been provided to contact them.
Anyone who can assist is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 1484 of Tuesday, November 3, 2026.
A COMMUNITY UNITED IN GRIEF
As tributes continue to emerge, Sophia is being remembered not simply for the tragic circumstances in which her life ended, but for the happiness and kindness she brought to those around her.
Her family’s words, describing her as a ray of sunshine, have become a particularly poignant reminder of the young life behind the headlines.
No family should have to say goodbye to their child so unexpectedly. And no school community should have to face the loss of someone so young.
For Sophia’s loved ones, friends and teachers, the days ahead will be incredibly difficult.
Their thoughts and memories of the girl with the bright smile will remain long after the road has reopened and the headlines have faded.
Rest in peace, Sophia.
