FINDING A VOICE THROUGH HIP-HOP: THE REMARKABLE STORY OF ISAIAH ACOSTA

He has never spoken a word out loud in his entire life, yet millions of people around the world have heard his powerful lyrics. Born in Glendale, Arizona, Isaiah Acosta came into the world with an extremely rare medical condition known as agnathia—a severe birth defect that left him without a lower jaw. Because of this condition, he cannot speak verbally as most people do, and he relies on a tracheostomy tube to breathe.

Despite these profound physical challenges, Isaiah refused to let silence define his future or limit his ambitions. Since breathing and communicating had been an uphill battle from day one, he sought an alternative way to express his thoughts, feelings, and experiences. He began writing poetry and prose, which eventually led him to discover a deep passion for hip-hop music.

To share his message with the world, Isaiah wrote the lyrics to a deeply personal song titled “Oxygen to Fly.” Unable to rap the track himself, he partnered with his close friend, rapper Trap House, who volunteered to serve as his physical voice. Isaiah crafted every single word, while Trap House provided the vocal delivery.

Together, they officially released “Oxygen to Fly” in 2016, premiering it at the prestigious SXSW festival. The song quickly went viral across the internet, inspiring millions and raising vital funds for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. Isaiah Acosta demonstrated that lacking a physical voice cannot stop a person from being heard, proving that determination and creativity can break through any barrier.
