Breaking Barriers: The Inspiring Journey of Kayla Kosmalski
When Kayla Kosmalski heard her name called on April 28, 2024, her mother’s legs were shaking. As the 17-year-old from Middletown walked across the stage wearing her crown, she spotted her mother in the audience and pointed to her. Kayla had just made history by becoming Miss Delaware Teen USA, the very first contestant with Down syndrome to win a state title in the Miss Teen USA pageant.

Her passion for performing began early in life. At age three, she asked Santa for a stage, leading her family to build a sparkling silver one in their living room. By her senior year of high school, Kayla had excelled as an honor student, cheerleader, swimmer, and theater performer, ultimately earning acceptance letters from 11 colleges.
Beyond pageantry and academics, Kayla became a dedicated advocate. Alongside her parents, she championed ABLE savings accounts to help individuals with disabilities secure financial independence without losing access to crucial government benefits. Her advocacy led to Delaware passing its 2015 legislation, officially named “Kayla’s Bill.”

In August 2024, Kayla made history again as the first contestant with Down syndrome to compete at Miss Teen USA, where she was awarded Miss Congeniality. Moving on to Wilmington University to study communications, she completed her freshman year in 2025 with a perfect 4.0 GPA while cheering for the university team. Kayla continues to demonstrate how early support enables individuals to pursue big dreams and inspire inclusion.
