A SURPRISE TRIBUTE FOR A FATHER’S FINAL WISH
When Stephen Addley was on his way to his wedding, he saw garbage trucks lined up along the road, their horns sounding in celebration. His colleagues had arranged a surprise escort, leaving the young groom in tears. At just 23 years old, the father from Dover, England, was facing a terminal diagnosis. Surgery had temporarily removed a rare sarcoma, but by October 2025, the cancer had returned aggressively and was declared inoperable. Shortly after learning the news, Stephen proposed to his partner, Hannah, wishing to marry before time ran out.

Determined to create lasting memories for their one-year-old daughter, Liberty-Rose, the couple planned a wedding in only three weeks. Local businesses and volunteers quickly stepped in to make it happen, donating Hannah’s dress, photography services, and venue organization. On November 22, Stephen’s co-workers from Veolia followed his wedding car in their trucks and stood outside the venue in their bright orange uniforms to welcome him. It was a heartfelt display of solidarity from the people who had worked alongside him every day.

Stephen passed away peacefully at home on December 24, surrounded by loved ones. The wedding photographs became cherished keepsakes that Hannah could one day share with Liberty-Rose to show her the love her parents shared. Additionally, community donations were placed into a trust to help support his daughter’s future. Through acts of kindness and solidarity, a family facing heartbreak was given a moment of comfort and joy.
