WATERFORD FAMILY TRAGEDY: FATHER HAD GIVEN STATEMENT TO GARDAÍ DAYS BEFORE DEADLY HOUSE FIRE AS INVESTIGATION INTENSIFIES

Philip and Kim English and their sons Callum, 12, and Jayden, 9, died after a fire engulfed their home in Waterford. Two other children remain critically ill as investigators examine whether the family had been targeted in a prolonged campaign of intimidation.

WATERFORD, IRELAND — A devastating house fire that claimed the lives of four members of the English family has prompted a major murder investigation, after reports emerged that the father had spoken to Gardaí about an earlier incident involving the family’s car.

Philip English, his wife Kim, and their sons Callum, 12, and Jayden, 9, died after a fire broke out at their home on Birch Avenue in the Birchwood estate, near Waterford City, shortly after 5 a.m. on Tuesday, October 13, 2026.

Two other children from the family were rescued and taken to Children’s Health Ireland at Crumlin, Dublin, where they were reported to be in critical condition.

Gardaí have confirmed that they believe the fire was started deliberately and have opened a murder investigation. The home remains a crime scene while specialist officers examine the circumstances surrounding the blaze.

The investigation has turned attention to reports that Philip had recently made a statement to Gardaí after the family’s car was set alight.

According to The Irish Sun, Philip spoke with officers around ten days before the fatal fire. Investigators are examining whether that earlier incident was connected to the latest attack.

The family had reportedly experienced other troubling incidents, including property damage and intimidation. Friends also told media outlets that Kim had expressed concerns about the family’s safety.

These accounts form part of the wider context being examined by investigators. However, the precise circumstances, any links between the incidents and the identity of those responsible have not been established publicly. \

Gardaí are investigating whether the family may have been targeted in connection with a suspected debt involving an associate of Philip.

Reports from Irish media indicate that investigators are exploring a possible link to drug-related intimidation. This remains an investigative line of inquiry, rather than a conclusion established by a court.

On Tuesday night, officers carried out searches at two properties in the Waterford area linked by reports to figures suspected of involvement in criminal activity. Gardaí said the searches were part of the evidence-gathering process.

No arrests had been announced in the reports available at the time of publication. The investigation remains ongoing, and no individual should be treated as responsible unless established through the legal process. <Cite refs={[“turn683584news12″,”turn683584search10”]}/>

NEIGHBOURS RECALL A FRIGHTENING MORNING

The fire broke out while the family was inside the two-storey house. Emergency services were alerted shortly after 5 a.m., and firefighters and ambulance crews attended the scene.

Neighbours described the shock of seeing the blaze and hearing cries for help. Some local residents attempted to assist, but the conditions around the burning property made it extremely difficult.

Waterford Fire Service said crews from surrounding stations responded and began firefighting operations on arrival. Several casualties were removed from the house before the scene was handed over to Gardaí.

The scale of the tragedy has left the Birchwood community grieving, with residents struggling to understand how a family known locally could be caught up in such devastating circumstances.\

A FAMILY REMEMBERED BY ITS COMMUNITY

Tributes have been shared for Philip, Kim and their children as news of the deaths spread through Waterford.

Philip’s adult son, John James English, described himself as devastated and at a loss for words. In comments reported by The Irish Times, he spoke of the heartbreak of losing his father and younger siblings, saying they had their whole lives ahead of them.

Callum was also remembered by Johnville FC, where he had been involved for five years, progressing from the club’s academy into its underage teams. The club expressed its condolences to the family and the wider community.

Local representatives have described the loss as devastating, while a support hub was established to provide assistance to people affected by the tragedy. A prayer vigil was also announced for the community. <Cite refs={[“turn683584search8″,”turn683584news14″,”turn683584news3″,”turn683584search10”]}/>

GARDAÍ APPEAL FOR WITNESSES AND DASHCAM FOOTAGE

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have information about the fire to come forward, particularly people who were near Birch Avenue and the Birchwood estate between 4:30 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. on October 13.

Investigators are also seeking dashcam recordings or images from drivers who were travelling in the area or on nearby roads during that period.

Anyone with information can contact Waterford Garda Station on 051 305300, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.

The investigation is being coordinated from Waterford Garda Station, with specialist units assisting. Post-mortem examinations have also been arranged as part of the formal investigation. \

For now, the central questions remain unanswered: who was responsible for setting the fire, whether it was connected to earlier incidents, and whether warning signs could have helped prevent the tragedy.

As the investigation continues, four members of one family have been lost, two children remain critically ill, and a community is waiting for answers.
