TWO TOP BARRISTERS APPOINTED IN MARK CAIN CASE — NEW DEVELOPMENT AFTER THE DEATH OF DR HANNAH TERRY

The prosecution of Mark Cain, charged with the murder of his wife, Dr Hannah Cain, known professionally as Dr Hannah Terry, is moving forward. Two experienced barristers have now been instructed as the case prepares for its next court hearing.

The investigation into the death of a respected Norfolk GP has entered another stage following the appointment of Christopher Paxton KC and Steven Ball to lead the prosecution against Mark Cain.

The barristers were instructed by the Crown Prosecution Service’s East of England team on October 14, 2026, according to Red Lion Chambers.

Dr Hannah Cain, 45, was found unresponsive at the couple’s home on Fern Hill in Dersingham, Norfolk, in the early hours of Sunday, October 4. Emergency services attended the property, but she could not be saved.

Her husband, Mark Cain, 45, was subsequently charged with her murder. He remains in custody as the criminal proceedings continue.

Christopher Paxton KC is a senior barrister with extensive experience in serious criminal cases, including homicide prosecutions. Steven Ball is also an experienced criminal barrister who has handled complex cases.

Their appointment marks an important procedural development, but it does not establish the outcome of the case. The prosecution will need to present its evidence through the court process, and Cain is entitled to a fair trial.

WHAT THE COURT HAS HEARD SO FAR

At an earlier hearing, prosecutors outlined the circumstances in which Dr Cain was found.

The ambulance service contacted police at approximately 2:25 a.m. on October 4. Paramedics found her unconscious and unresponsive in an upstairs bedroom.

A post-mortem examination recorded blunt-force injuries to the right side of her head and a neck injury that could be consistent with compression, according to evidence presented in court.

Children were reportedly present at the property at the time. Authorities have not publicly established all the events leading up to Dr Cain’s death.

 REMEMBERING DR HANNAH CAIN

Known professionally as Dr Hannah Terry, she worked as a general practitioner at Grimston Medical Centre and also operated a cosmetics business.

Her family described her as “kind, generous and loving,” paying tribute to her as a devoted mother, daughter, sister and friend. They also praised the care she provided to her patients.

The medical practice temporarily closed following the news, reflecting the impact of the loss on colleagues and the wider community.

 WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Mark Cain appeared at King’s Lynn Crown Court on October 8 and was remanded in custody. A plea hearing is provisionally scheduled for December 3, 2026, at Norwich Crown Court. A trial date had not been set in the reports reviewed.

As the case progresses, the court will consider the evidence and determine the legal issues before it.

For Dr Cain’s family, colleagues and patients, the proceedings come amid profound grief. For now, the focus remains on the judicial process and the facts that will be presented in court.
