FISHERMAN, 71, KILLED BY NEARLY 12-FOOT ALLIGATOR MOMENTS AFTER SHOWING OFF HIS CATCH

Steven “Steve” Hamilton was enjoying an afternoon fishing trip in Florida when a large alligator suddenly grabbed his leg and pulled him into the water. The beloved local musician never made it home.

A peaceful afternoon by the water turned into tragedy for 71-year-old Steven Hamilton, a fisherman and longtime musician from Winter Garden, Florida.

On October 16, 2026, Hamilton was fishing at Dr. Bradford Memorial Park near Lake Apopka, a place he regularly visited. After catching a bass, he reportedly asked someone nearby to take a photograph of him holding his catch.

Moments later, a nearly 12-foot alligator emerged from the water.

According to witness Beatrice Soto, the animal grabbed Hamilton by the leg and dragged him into the lake. He did not resurface, leaving witnesses facing a frightening and heartbreaking scene.

Emergency crews responded at around 5 p.m. Authorities later recovered Hamilton’s body from the water. Reports said he suffered a severe injury to his leg and drowned.

The presence of other alligators in the water made recovery efforts especially difficult. Officials eventually retrieved Hamilton’s body approximately two hours after the incident.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission confirmed that a contracted trapper removed an alligator measuring 11 feet and 8 inches from the area. The animal was subsequently euthanized.

The Winter Garden Police Department and wildlife officials are investigating the incident.

Although alligators are common throughout Florida, authorities continue to remind residents and visitors to remain cautious around lakes, ponds and other waterways where the reptiles may be present.

Remembering the Man Behind the Headlines

Beyond the tragedy, Hamilton was remembered as a kind and generous man who had spent decades sharing his love of music with others.

He was a longtime member of the Bone Brothers Band and had been part of the Orlando-area music community for nearly 40 years. Friends recalled his musical talent, his willingness to share his knowledge and the warmth he brought to those around him.

Connor Kelly, who occasionally fished alongside Hamilton, described feeling devastated when he learned about the incident.

Christine Pompilio, a local music venue manager who knew Hamilton through the music scene, also paid tribute to his character and generosity, saying he would be deeply missed.

For those who knew him, Hamilton was much more than the victim of a tragic wildlife encounter. He was a friend, a musician and a familiar face whose presence had become part of their lives.

Lake Apopka is known for its alligator population, and local residents have described seeing the animals near the shoreline. However, the suddenness of this incident has left the community grieving and raised renewed concerns about safety around the water.

Authorities urge people to maintain a safe distance from alligators, avoid approaching or feeding them, and remain alert when fishing or spending time near the water’s edge.

Steven Hamilton had gone out to enjoy an activity he loved. His death has left friends and members of the local music community mourning a man they remember for his kindness, talent and generous spirit.

May he rest in peace, and may his loved ones find comfort in the memories they shared with him.
