A SOUTH AFRICAN FAMILY’S COURAGEOUS BATTLE WITH BRAIN CANCER

For over a decade, Antonio April, a young boy from Genadendal in South Africa’s Western Cape, has been fighting a brain tumour. Diagnosed in 2013 with astrocytoma—a cancer affecting the supportive cells of the brain and spinal cord—Antonio has endured years of chemotherapy, radiation, and frequent hospitalizations. His battle recently worsened when doctors discovered the cancer had spread to his spine while remaining in his brain, leading to severe seizures, an intensive care stay, and permanent loss of independence.

Now reliant on a wheelchair and palliative care aimed at ensuring his comfort and dignity, Antonio requires constant daily assistance. Despite his complex condition, his mother shared small signs of hope, noting that he has had no recent seizures, sleeps less, and speaks a little more each day. While these positive changes offer moments of emotional relief, his medical situation remains critical.

Beyond the physical toll, the financial and practical strain on his family is immense. Facing shortages at their local health clinic, Antonio’s mother has reached out through the Kids-Can Cancer Foundation for basic essentials. Rather than asking for costly medical cures, her request focuses on immediate daily needs: nappies for hygiene, Ensure nutritional supplements, food parcels, and financial help for household expenses.

To support the family’s day-to-day caregiving, a BackaBuddy crowdfunding page was launched to gather community assistance. Antonio’s story highlights the profound challenge of pediatric cancer, reminding us how simple, compassionate gifts like food and supplies can bring dignity and essential relief to a family in crisis.
