12-YEAR-OLD BOY’S INCREDIBLE ACT OF COURAGE SAVES HIS MUM’S LIFE AFTER SHE COLLAPSES AT THE WHEEL
A 12-year-old boy has been hailed a hero after making a split-second decision that may have saved both his and his mother’s lives when she suddenly lost consciousness while driving at 60mph.
Zac was travelling in the passenger seat of a car driven by his mum, Nicola, on the A40 in the UK. They were on their way to a Christmas market when Nicola suddenly began feeling unwell.
Realising something was wrong, Nicola managed to steer the car partly off the road. But before she could bring the vehicle to a complete stop, she lost consciousness behind the wheel.
What happened next could have ended in unimaginable tragedy.
Nicola’s automatic car remained in drive, and her foot became jammed on the accelerator. With nobody controlling the vehicle, the car began accelerating and veering back onto the busy dual carriageway.
Zac suddenly found himself in a terrifying situation. His mum was unconscious, the car was gathering speed, and he knew they were in immediate danger.
With only seconds to react, the young boy made a courageous decision that would change everything.
Leaning across the cabin from the passenger seat, Zac grabbed the steering wheel and guided the out-of-control car towards the central reservation.
The vehicle scraped and bumped along the barrier as Zac desperately tried to bring it to a halt. He knew he had to act quickly to prevent the car from crashing into a tree or plunging over the roadside banking.
Against the odds, his actions stopped the vehicle from continuing along the carriageway and potentially causing a far more devastating accident.
But Zac’s bravery did not end there.
Once the car had stopped, he switched off the engine and called 999 for emergency assistance. Despite being just a child and having experienced an extremely frightening ordeal, he remained inside the vehicle while waiting for help to arrive.
He even used the car’s satellite navigation system to identify their exact location, giving emergency call handlers the information they needed to help police officers and paramedics find them as quickly as possible.
During the emergency call, Zac could be heard reassuring his mum as he waited for help to reach them.
For a boy of his age, his calmness, quick thinking and determination in such a dangerous situation were extraordinary.
Nicola had been unconscious for approximately seven minutes. Her collapse was attributed to extremely low blood pressure, and she was taken to hospital for medical care.
She is now awaiting further cardiology tests and has been unable to return to driving while doctors investigate her condition.
For Nicola, the terrifying journey could have ended in tragedy. Instead, she survived thanks in large part to her son’s remarkable courage and presence of mind.
Zac, who is now 13, will receive the Child of Courage Award at the Pride of Britain Awards in London, recognising the extraordinary bravery he displayed when his mother needed him most.
The story is a powerful reminder that courage is not always about being fearless. Sometimes, it means acting when you are frightened, making an impossible decision in a matter of seconds, and doing everything you can to protect someone you love.
Zac was only a passenger that day. But when the situation became critical, he stepped forward and did what he could to save two lives.
His quick thinking, determination and selflessness have earned him widespread admiration — and the pride of a mother who owes her son an immeasurable debt of gratitude.
Well done, Zac. You showed extraordinary courage in the face of unimaginable fear. Your actions that day may have made all the difference, and your mum has every reason to be incredibly proud of you.
Sometimes, the smallest people show the greatest bravery.
