“HE WAS ONLY TWO YEARS OLD” — LITTLE PETER MULCAIRE KILLED IN HORRIFIC HIT-AND-RUN AS HEARTBROKEN FAMILY SAYS GOODBYE
A family’s world has been shattered after two-year-old Peter Mulcaire was fatally struck by a jeep while playing outside his home in Ireland. Just days before the tragedy, the little boy had begun preschool, taking his first steps into a world full of promise, laughter and new adventures.
The heartbreaking incident happened shortly before 4 p.m. on Saturday, September 5, 2026, in the Abbeycourt area of Rathkeale, County Limerick.
Peter was reportedly playing on a small toy tractor near his family home when he was struck by a four-wheel-drive vehicle. He suffered catastrophic injuries, and emergency responders rushed to help him.
A family member initially took the toddler to University Hospital Limerick, where he was pronounced dead that afternoon.
The vehicle did not remain at the scene, prompting a Garda investigation into the fatal collision. A man in his 30s was subsequently arrested at another location on suspicion of driving under the influence of an intoxicant. He was released after providing an evidential sample, pending analysis. The investigation into the circumstances of the incident continued.
A LITTLE BOY WHO BROUGHT SUNSHINE INTO EVERY ROOM
For Peter’s parents, Kerrie and James, the loss of their beloved son is an unimaginable heartbreak. His older brother, Jim, and baby sister, Delilah, have also been left without the little boy whose presence brought so much joy to their family.
Peter had only just started attending a local preschool the week before his death. His older brother had accompanied him into his first class, a moment that should have marked the beginning of countless childhood memories.
Instead, the family was suddenly forced to face a future without him.
At his funeral Mass at St Mary’s Church in Rathkeale, Father Eamonn Fitzgibbon remembered Peter as a joyful, mischievous little boy whose smile could brighten any room.
He described Peter as his family’s sunshine and pride, saying that the toddler left a lasting impression on everyone he met.
Peter loved animals, including the family’s dogs and ponies. He enjoyed colourful rainbows, his favourite songs and spending time with his dad, often sitting on his shoulders.
These seemingly ordinary childhood pleasures have become precious memories for the family who loved him so deeply.
A FUNERAL FILLED WITH LOVE AND HEARTBREAK
Peter’s funeral on September 9 was an emotional farewell attended by relatives, friends, school staff and members of the local community.
Mourners wore pink T-shirts bearing his photograph and the words “Forever 2”. Some arrived dressed as characters from his favourite cartoons, including Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse and Peppa Pig, to honour the little boy who had brought so much happiness into their lives.
His favourite songs, including You Are My Sunshine and Twinkle Twinkle, Little Star, filled the church as his grieving parents said their final goodbyes.
Family members also placed meaningful belongings beside his coffin, including his buggy, schoolbag and items representing his love of ponies.
In one particularly moving gesture, Peter’s baby sister, Delilah, was baptised during the funeral Mass at her family’s request. The ceremony allowed Peter to remain symbolically part of an important milestone in his little sister’s life.
Delilah wore the same white shawl that Peter, his brother and their father had worn for their own baptisms.
It was a tender reminder that, although Peter was no longer physically present, he would always remain part of his family’s story.
A MOTHER’S LOVE THAT WILL NEVER END
Peter’s mother, Kerrie, had recently shared photographs celebrating her son’s first day at preschool. The images captured a happy little boy beginning a new chapter in his young life.
Those photographs now hold a heartbreaking significance.
For parents, watching a child grow means anticipating first days at school, birthdays, friendships and countless milestones. Kerrie and James have instead been left to cherish the memories they made with Peter while facing the unimaginable pain of knowing those future moments will never come.
At the funeral, the priest recalled Kerrie’s words about her son’s radiant smile and the impression he left on everyone he met.
Her love for Peter was evident throughout the farewell, as family and friends gathered to celebrate his short but precious life.
AN ENTIRE COMMUNITY MOURNS
The tragedy sent shockwaves through Rathkeale, where residents came together to support the grieving family.
A community fun day scheduled for the weekend following Peter’s death was cancelled as a mark of respect. Prayers were also offered across the Diocese of Limerick.
After the funeral Mass, Peter’s coffin was carried to a waiting horse-drawn carriage led by four white horses, with a procession of Lamborghini cars accompanying him to his final resting place at New Cemetery in Rathkeale.
It was a farewell filled with love, sorrow and the determination to honour a little boy whose life, though tragically short, had touched so many people.
The Garda investigation continued following the collision, with officers appealing for witnesses and relevant camera footage to help establish what happened.
Peter Mulcaire was only two years old. He had just begun discovering the world, making new friends and creating memories that his family should have been able to share with him for years to come.
His life was far too short, but the love surrounding him was immense.
May little Peter rest in peace, and may Kerrie, James, Jim, Delilah and everyone who loved him find strength in one another during the darkest days of their lives.
