PRAYERS FOR 14-YEAR-OLD BRANTLEY — TEXAS TEEN FACES A LONG ROAD TO RECOVERY AFTER SCHOOL BUS HIT-AND-RUN
The eighth-grade student and young football player was critically injured in a crash in Dayton, Texas. As his family faces an uncertain recovery journey, their community is rallying around them with prayers, love and support.
A family’s world changed in an instant when 14-year-old Brantley was critically injured in a hit-and-run crash in Texas.
Brantley, an eighth-grade student at Woodrow Wilson Junior High School in Dayton, was involved in the incident early on Friday morning, October 16, near the intersection of U.S. Highway 90 and Stilson Road.
According to police, a vehicle struck the teenager and the driver left the scene without stopping to provide assistance.
Brantley suffered severe injuries and was airlifted to Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, where he received urgent medical care.
His father, Andrew Conner, later identified him publicly and described the teenager as fighting for his life.
For Brantley’s family, the hours and days that followed brought fear, uncertainty and the painful reality of watching a child face a medical crisis.
A YOUNG FOOTBALL PLAYER WITH SO MUCH LIFE AHEAD
At just 14, Brantley was still in the early years of his teenage life.
He attended Woodrow Wilson Junior High School and played on the school’s football team. Like many young athletes, he had years of experiences ahead of him — friendships to build, goals to pursue and opportunities to discover.
Instead, his family found themselves focused on one thing: hoping he would recover.
His aunt described him as a bright and intelligent young boy, while relatives have asked the community to keep him in their thoughts and prayers.
The situation has also affected the wider Dayton school community. Dayton Independent School District expressed its concern for the student and his family and said it was working with first responders and law enforcement.
The district also made counselling support available to students and staff affected by the incident.
A 70-YEAR-OLD BUS DRIVER WAS ARRESTED
Investigators arrested 70-year-old Ricky Eugene Cherry, who was identified in local reporting as a Dayton ISD bus driver.
According to ABC13 Houston, jail records listed a charge of collision causing serious bodily injury. Authorities said the investigation was continuing.
Police have reported that the teenager was walking in the area when he was struck. Investigators are examining the circumstances of the incident, including the driver’s alleged failure to stop and render aid.
An arrest and criminal charge are allegations, not a finding of guilt. The case must proceed through the legal system, and the circumstances will need to be established through the investigation.
A LONG ROAD AHEAD FOR BRANTLEY AND HIS FAMILY
In the days following the crash, Brantley’s family faced the uncertainty of his condition and the challenges associated with serious injuries.
His treatment in Houston also meant that loved ones had to focus on hospital visits, travel and supporting one another while waiting for news.
A fundraising campaign was launched to help with medical expenses, travel costs and potential rehabilitation needs. Supporters have been encouraged to help the family where they can, or simply share messages of hope and encouragement.
For parents watching their child go through such an ordeal, even the smallest sign of progress can mean everything.
As of October 21, local reporting said Brantley was still recovering. His family has not publicly shared every detail of his medical condition, and his recovery remains a deeply personal journey.
PLEASE KEEP BRANTLEY IN YOUR PRAYERS 🙏
Behind every headline is a young person whose life has been changed, and a family hoping for better days.
Brantley should be thinking about school, football and the future ahead of him. Instead, he is receiving medical care while the people who love him wait and hope for his recovery.
May his doctors and nurses have the strength and wisdom to guide his treatment. May his body grow stronger with each passing day. And may his mother, Trista, his father, Andrew, and the entire family find comfort in the support surrounding them.
Please join us in sending love, hope and prayers to Brantley.
May this young boy have the strength to face the road ahead, and may his family never feel alone as they stand beside him. 🤍🙏
