“SHE WAS ON A FAMILY HOLIDAY” — AMERICAN TOURIST, 36, DIES AFTER FALLING FROM ITALIAN MOUNTAIN

Michelle Alejandra Rubio Leiva was exploring the breathtaking Dolomites with her family when a walk in the mountains ended in tragedy. The 36-year-old fell from an exposed section of the trail, leaving her loved ones facing an unimaginable loss.

A family holiday in the Italian mountains has ended in heartbreak after an American tourist lost her life in a fall in the Dolomites.

Michelle Alejandra Rubio Leiva, 36, was hiking with relatives near Forcella Pordoi, above the mountain town of Canazei in northern Italy, on October 17, 2026.

The group was enjoying the dramatic scenery of the Dolomites, a mountain range known for its towering rock faces, sweeping views and popular hiking routes.

But around midday, the outing turned into a tragedy when Michelle lost her footing on an exposed section of the mountainside and fell approximately 300 metres — nearly 1,000 feet.

Her relatives and other people in the area were left facing a devastating emergency as rescue teams rushed to the scene.

Emergency services received an alert at around noon after witnesses reported the fall.

The Trentino Alpine and Speleological Rescue service was mobilised, alongside an air ambulance.

A mountain rescuer who was already nearby quickly reached the area and provided the helicopter crew with precise coordinates to help them locate the accident site.

At approximately 12:30 p.m., medical personnel were lowered onto the mountainside.

Despite the rapid response, the doctor could only confirm Michelle’s death at the scene.

Rescuers then worked to bring her relatives safely away from the accident area. They were transported by helicopter to Canazei before a separate flight recovered Michelle’s body and transferred it to local authorities.

The operation concluded at around 2:30 p.m.

The accident happened near Forcella Pordoi, at an elevation of approximately 2,750 metres above sea level.

The area attracts visitors because of its spectacular panoramas and access to nearby mountain refuges. A cable car also brings tourists close to the high-altitude landscape.

However, the terrain beyond the upper station can be steep and exposed, with loose gravel that may make footing difficult.

Some media reports said Michelle had moved towards a scenic viewpoint, reportedly to take a photograph, before the fall. The official rescue account confirmed that she slipped on an exposed section of the mountain, but did not establish the precise sequence of events leading up to the accident.

Her death is a painful reminder that even a popular tourist destination can present serious risks when trails run close to steep drops.

A LIFE THAT CROSSED BORDERS

Michelle was originally from Guatemala and had connections to Florida, where she worked in communications, marketing and business development.

Reports from Italian media said she had moved to Rome in 2025 and was working as a digital nomad.

She had travelled to the Trentino region with her family for a holiday, taking time to explore one of Europe’s most recognisable mountain landscapes.

For those who loved her, the trip was supposed to be an opportunity to make memories together. Instead, they were forced to confront a sudden and devastating loss far from home.

A FAMILY LEFT TO MOURN

The immediate priority for rescuers was not only to reach Michelle but also to ensure that her relatives could be brought safely away from the exposed area.

They were flown to Canazei while the recovery operation continued.

The official account of the rescue did not provide further details about the family’s condition, and the circumstances surrounding the fall remain a matter for the relevant authorities.

What remains clear is the scale of the loss: a 36-year-old woman had travelled to Italy with her family, only for an afternoon in the mountains to end in tragedy.

A HEARTBREAKING REMINDER

The Dolomites are celebrated for their extraordinary beauty, drawing hikers and visitors from around the world. Yet mountain landscapes demand caution, especially on narrow or exposed routes where a single slip can have irreversible consequences.

Michelle’s death has brought renewed attention to the importance of staying on safe, designated paths and taking care when approaching panoramic viewpoints.

For her family, however, the tragedy is much more than a warning about mountain safety. It is the sudden absence of someone whose life, plans and future were still unfolding.

A holiday that should have brought a family closer through shared memories has instead become a day they will never forget for the most painful of reasons. Michelle was 36, and her life ended far too soon.
