FROM SURVIVOR TO CHAMPION: THE INSPIRING JOURNEY OF DUNIA SIBOMANA-RODRIGUEZ
At just six years old, Dunia Sibomana-Rodriguez survived a horrific chimpanzee attack while playing with his brother and cousin in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The tragic incident left him with severe injuries to his face and hand. To receive complex facial reconstructive treatment, he traveled to the United States, beginning a long and difficult journey marked by numerous surgeries and extensive recoveries. After spending time with host families, he eventually found a loving permanent home with Long Beach wrestling coach Miguel Rodriguez and his wife, Marissa, who officially adopted him.

In his new life, wrestling quickly became a powerful outlet for strength and resilience. At age 14, Dunia won his first New York state high school wrestling championship. He went on to capture two additional state titles, building an exceptional athletic record that earned him a scholarship at the University of North Carolina.
Beyond his American high school success, Dunia has achieved remarkable international acclaim. Representing his native Democratic Republic of the Congo, he captured a gold medal in the 57-kilogram freestyle division at the 2026 African Championships.

In 2026, he arrived at UNC as a three-time New York state champion and is officially listed as a freshman on North Carolina’s 2026–2027 wrestling roster. Backed by years of intensive medical care, strong family support, and relentless training, Dunia continues to forge an incredible athletic career with promising matches ahead.
