BELOVED GP FOUND DEAD AT HOME — HER HUSBAND IS CHARGED WITH MURDER
DR HANNAH CAIN WAS A MOTHER OF THREE AND A WELL-RESPECTED GP KNOWN PROFESSIONALLY AS DR HANNAH TERRY
A respected family doctor found dead at her home near the Sandringham Estate has been remembered as a “kind, generous and loving” mother — as her husband appears in court charged with her murder.
Dr Hannah Cain, 45, known professionally as Dr Hannah Terry, was found at her home in Fern Hill, Dersingham, Norfolk, in the early hours of Sunday, October 4.
Her husband, 45-year-old Mark Cain, was subsequently arrested and charged with murder.
He appeared before Norwich Magistrates’ Court on October 7 and was remanded in custody. He is due to appear at King’s Lynn Crown Court on Thursday, October 8.
THE EMERGENCY CALL IN THE EARLY HOURS
Emergency services were called to the property at around 2:20 a.m. on October 4.
Prosecutor Jacqui Hanlon told the court that the ambulance service contacted police at 2:25 a.m. after Hannah was found upstairs.
She was described in court as being “not breathing, not conscious” when paramedics attended.
Police subsequently began a murder investigation.
Hannah’s husband, Mark, was arrested following the discovery and later charged by the Crown Prosecution Service.
He appeared in court wearing a black sweater and spoke only to confirm his name, address and date of birth. He was not asked to enter a plea.
WHAT DID THE POST-MORTEM FIND?
A Home Office post-mortem examination was carried out on October 5.
Initially, Norfolk Police said the cause of Hannah’s death remained pending further investigation.
But when Mark Cain appeared in court, the prosecution provided additional information about the examination.
The court heard that the post-mortem had noted a blunt-force injury to the right side of Hannah’s head.
It also identified an injury that could be suggestive of compression of the neck.
These details were presented to the court as part of the prosecution case. They do not, by themselves, establish who caused the injuries or prove the murder allegation against Mark Cain.
The criminal proceedings remain active, and Cain has the right to a fair trial.
CHILDREN WERE PRESENT AT THE PROPERTY
The court also heard that children were present at the home at the time.
Local reports said Hannah had been hosting a sleepover for children at the family property.
The circumstances have added another deeply distressing dimension to a case that has already shocked the local community.
The children were taken back to their families while police established a cordon around the property, according to local reporting.
A DOCTOR WHO CARED FOR HER COMMUNITY
Hannah was a GP at Grimston Medical Centre and was known professionally as Dr Hannah Terry.
According to information from her professional business website, she had been qualified as a doctor for more than 15 years and had worked as a GP for around eight years.
She also ran Norfolk Sky Aesthetics while continuing her medical career.
Her colleagues have described her as intelligent, kind and generous, with one tribute highlighting the warmth and positivity she brought to those around her.
Grimston Medical Centre has temporarily closed because of what it described as “extremely difficult circumstances affecting our practice team.”
Flowers and tributes have since been left outside the practice.
HER CONNECTION TO THE ROYAL FAMILY
The tragedy has attracted additional attention because Hannah reportedly served in a pool of doctors regularly available to members of the Royal Family when they were staying in the Sandringham area.
The Cain family home is just over a mile from Sandringham House, the Norfolk residence of King Charles III and Queen Camilla.
Reports have said Hannah had treated members of the Royal Family, although details of individual patients are not publicly confirmed by medical authorities.
The Royal Family was reportedly informed of her death.
“WE ARE DEVASTATED”
For Hannah’s family, however, she was much more than a doctor.
She was a mother, daughter, sister, aunt, daughter-in-law and friend.
Her family released a statement describing their grief.
They said they were “devastated by the loss of our beautiful Hannah” and described her as “kind, generous and loving.”
They also praised the care she gave to her patients, saying they were incredibly proud of the woman she was.
The family has asked for privacy as they mourn.
HER HUSBAND REMAINS IN CUSTODY
Mark Cain was remanded in custody following his appearance at Norwich Magistrates’ Court.
The judge sent the case to King’s Lynn Crown Court, where Cain is due to appear on October 8.
The Crown Prosecution Service has stressed that bringing a charge is not a finding of guilt. The evidence will ultimately have to be considered by the courts.
Norfolk Police said specialist officers are supporting Hannah’s family.
The investigation remains ongoing.
A COMMUNITY LEFT SEARCHING FOR ANSWERS
For those who knew Hannah as Dr Terry, the story is difficult to comprehend.
Patients knew her as a doctor who cared for them.
Colleagues knew her as a valued member of their medical team.
Her family knew her as a mother, daughter, sister and friend.
Now, as the legal case against her husband begins, investigators must establish exactly what happened inside the Dersingham home during the early hours of October 4.
What happened before Hannah was found unconscious?
What caused the injuries described in court?
And what evidence led prosecutors to charge her husband with murder?
Those questions will now be examined through the criminal justice process.
For Hannah’s loved ones, however, the investigation cannot change the loss of the woman they describe simply as their “beautiful Hannah.”
A mother.
A doctor.
A daughter.
And a woman whose family says she brought kindness and care to everyone around her.
