Hellayna “Layna” King was remembered as the family’s “sunshine” — a joyful little girl who loved the farm, singing and being outdoors. Now, her loved ones are facing a goodbye they never imagined.

A Kentucky family is mourning the heartbreaking loss of 4-year-old Hellayna Michelle King, who died after a tragic accident involving a family tractor.

Layna was just weeks away from celebrating her fifth birthday.

Instead of preparing for her special day, her family gathered to say goodbye to a little girl they described as full of life, happiness and love.

A TRAGIC ACCIDENT ON THE FAMILY FARM

The accident happened on Sept. 2, 2026, on Red River Road in Clark County, Kentucky, according to Clark County Coroner Neal Oliver.

Officials said Layna was riding on the back of a tractor when she fell off. The tractor then accidentally backed over her.

She suffered fatal injuries in the incident.

The sudden loss has left her family devastated.

Her aunt, LaDonna Lovings, said the family is now facing the unimaginable task of planning a funeral instead of a birthday celebration.

“Nothing can prepare you for having to say goodbye,” Lovings told local media.

SHE WAS THE FAMILY’S “SUNSHINE”

For those who knew Layna, she was much more than the little girl at the center of a tragic accident.

Her family’s obituary described her as a bright and lively child who was full of life and brought joy to those around her.

She loved being outdoors and spending time on her grandparents’ farm.

The farm was a special place for her, and she especially loved the cows.

She also loved to sing, filling her days with what her family described as a sweet voice and happy spirit.

Lovings called her the family’s “sunshine.”

That description has taken on an especially painful meaning now that Layna is gone.

A BIRTHDAY THAT WILL NEVER COME

Layna was born on Oct. 5, 2021, meaning she would have turned five just one month after the accident.

Her family had every reason to expect another birthday filled with childhood joy.

Instead, they were preparing for her funeral.

Her funeral was held on Sept. 5, only days after the accident.

For her loved ones, the calendar will now carry a painful reminder of the little girl who should have been celebrating another year of her life.

FAMILY DESCRIBES THE PAIN OF WAITING FOR HELP

The tragedy was made even more painful by the circumstances surrounding the emergency response.

According to Lovings, the family waited approximately 45 minutes for emergency responders to reach them, with a nearby bridge closure forcing a longer route.

She said the normal journey could have taken considerably less time if the bridge had been open.

Lovings acknowledged that no one can know whether a faster response would have changed the outcome, but said having someone there to help Layna sooner would have meant everything to the family.

The bridge closure has reportedly been a concern in the community for years, and Layna’s death has renewed calls for the area’s transportation problems to be addressed.

The grief surrounding Layna’s death is difficult for her family to put into words.

Lovings said the family will never forget the little girl who brought so much happiness into their lives.

“Words can’t express how much we miss her,” she said.

And perhaps the most heartbreaking part is knowing just how much life Layna still had ahead of her.

She had not yet reached her fifth birthday.

She had more songs to sing, more days to spend outdoors, more time with her family and more memories waiting to be made.

Instead, those memories now live only in the hearts of the people who loved her.
