My Daughter Sold My House While I Was in Surgery—Then the Buyer Called Me Mom
PART 2 — THE SON I BURIED FORTY-FIVE YEARS AGO
“Your daughter knew I was coming, Mom. That’s why she sold your house before you woke up.”
I stared at the stranger kneeling beside my hospital bed.
His name was Daniel.
And according to the birth certificate trembling in my hands, he was my son.
The son I’d buried in my heart forty-five years ago.
“That’s impossible,” I whispered. “The doctors told me my baby died.”
Daniel gently took my hand.
“He didn’t die, Mom. He was adopted three days after you gave birth.”
My chest tightened.
“Adopted? By whom?”
“A wealthy couple in Massachusetts. They told me my birth mother had abandoned me.”
Tears streamed down my cheeks.
“I never abandoned you. I held you for ten minutes before a nurse took you away. The next morning, they told me you’d stopped breathing.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“Someone lied to both of us.”
He opened a leather folder and showed me a faded hospital record.
At the bottom was a signature authorizing the adoption.
I recognized the handwriting immediately.
My late husband’s mother.
The woman who’d always hated me for marrying her son.
“She told my husband the baby died, too,” I whispered.
Daniel nodded.
“I spent years searching. Three months ago, I finally found your address.”
“Then why didn’t you come sooner?”
His expression darkened.
“Because Jessica answered my first letter.”
My blood ran cold.
He handed me a printed email.
Jessica had written:
My mother doesn’t want contact with you. She’s elderly, confused, and has no interest in reopening the past.
“I never wrote that!” I cried.
“I know,” Daniel said. “That’s why I came to Vermont.”
He explained that he’d visited my house while I was hospitalized. Jessica had answered the door and told him I was dying.
Then she’d offered to sell him the property.
“She said you needed money for medical expenses,” Daniel continued. “But when I asked to speak with you, she refused.”
“Why would she do this?”
Daniel hesitated.
“Because I told her I had proof of something else.”
He opened another envelope.
Inside was a copy of my husband’s will.
I recognized the document. We’d signed our wills together twenty years earlier.
But there was a page I’d never seen.
It stated that if our firstborn son was ever found alive, he would inherit half of the family property after my death.
I covered my mouth.
“Jessica knew?”
“She found the original paperwork in your attic,” Daniel said. “She knew I was alive before I ever contacted her.”
I began to sob.
My own daughter had kept my son from me because she was afraid of losing an inheritance.
Daniel squeezed my hand.
“The house is still yours to live in, Mom. I bought it to protect it. I never wanted to take anything away from you.”
For the first time since surgery, I felt safe.
Then my hospital door swung open.
Jessica stood there, smiling.
“Mom! I brought your nursing home paperwork.”
Her smile disappeared when she saw Daniel.
“What are YOU doing here?”
Daniel stood slowly.
“Hello, Jessica.”
She turned pale.
Then she noticed the documents spread across my blanket.
“Mom, whatever he told you, he’s lying!”
I looked directly at my daughter.
“Did you know my son was alive?”
Jessica said nothing.
“Answer me.”
Her lips trembled.
Finally, she whispered, “You weren’t supposed to find out.”
The room fell silent.
Then Daniel reached into his briefcase.
“There’s one more thing, Jessica. Something the title company discovered when you sold me the house.”
He placed a document on the table.
“The power of attorney you used was forged.”
Jessica stumbled backward.
But Daniel wasn’t finished.
“And the person who helped you forge it is sitting in this hospital right now.”
He turned toward the doorway.
A woman in a white medical coat had just appeared.
I recognized her instantly.
She was the doctor who had signed my surgical consent forms.
And when she saw Daniel, she dropped the medical chart she was holding.
