“THEY CARRIED SO MUCH PAIN”: BRAY COUPLE LAID TO REST BESIDE THEIR TWO CHILDREN AFTER YEARS OF HEARTBREAK
Hundreds gathered to say goodbye to Bridget “Biddy” O’Brien, 45, and James “Jamie” McGinn, 38, whose lives were marked by the devastating loss of their two young children in a 2017 apartment fire. At their joint funeral, mourners heard how the couple continued to show kindness to others despite carrying profound grief.
A community in County Wicklow has come together to mourn a husband and wife whose lives were shaped by years of unimaginable loss.
Bridget “Biddy” O’Brien, 45, and her husband, James “Jamie” McGinn, 38, were laid to rest together at a joint funeral at St Anne’s Church in Shankill on October 27, 2026.
The couple had been found dead at their home in the Cois Cairn estate in Bray on October 21.
Their funeral brought renewed attention to the tragedy they had endured almost a decade earlier, when their two young children, Jordan and Holly, died in a devastating apartment fire in Clondalkin, Dublin.
In a particularly emotional farewell, Biddy and Jamie were buried alongside their beloved children at Springfield Cemetery in Bray.
A FAMILY THAT HAD ALREADY ENDURED SO MUCH
In March 2017, a fire broke out at an apartment complex in Clondalkin while Biddy and her children were visiting relatives.
Four-year-old Jordan and his younger sister Holly, who was two at the time, lost their lives in the blaze.
The fire also claimed the lives of Biddy’s pregnant cousin, Annmarie O’Brien, 27, and Annmarie’s two-year-old daughter, Paris.
Biddy was the sole survivor among her immediate family members caught in the fire. She suffered extensive burns, reportedly covering around 70 per cent of her body, and spent a prolonged period in hospital receiving treatment.
Her injuries were so severe that she could not attend her children’s funerals. She reportedly learned that Jordan and Holly had passed away around six weeks after the fire.
For Biddy, the loss was compounded by the fact that she had not been able to say goodbye to her children or grieve alongside the rest of her family at the time.
“SHE NEVER FULLY RETURNED TO THE PERSON SHE HAD BEEN BEFORE”
During the funeral Mass, parish priest Father Michael O’Kelly spoke about the lasting impact the tragedy had on Biddy.
He told mourners that, according to conversations with her family, she had never fully returned to the joyful person she had been before the fire.
The priest explained that not having the opportunity to say goodbye to her children or grieve properly had continued to haunt her.
Yet those closest to her remembered something else about Biddy: despite her own suffering, she never lost her kindness.
Father O’Kelly recalled how she had offered support and thoughtfulness to neighbours who were experiencing difficulties of their own.
He said her ability to recognise pain in others and make room in her heart to help them was an important part of the legacy she left behind.
Even through her darkest periods, her family said, she continued to care for those around her.
JAMIE ALSO CARRIED THE PAIN OF LOSING HIS CHILDREN
The funeral also paid tribute to Jamie, who was remembered as an energetic, outgoing and generous man.
His father, Michael McGinn, told the priest about his son’s childhood near the Bray seafront and his natural curiosity about how things were made.
Jamie enjoyed learning practical skills and working with his hands. He was described as someone who would readily help anyone who needed him.
In more recent years, he had become involved in establishing a roofing business.
Father O’Kelly said the work had given Jamie a sense of focus and helped him cope with the loss of his children.
However, the priest acknowledged that Jamie continued to carry profound pain.
The funeral also reflected some of the things that had mattered to him throughout his life, including his craftsmanship, his generosity and his love of learning.
A TOOLBOX, TWO BIBLES AND A RADIO AT THEIR FINAL FAREWELL
Among the most moving moments of the service were the symbolic gifts brought to the altar in memory of the couple.
A toolbox represented Jamie’s love of working with his hands and creating things.
Two Bibles were presented to reflect the couple’s faith, while a radio symbolised their shared enjoyment of listening to music and programmes together.
These simple objects offered a glimpse into their personalities and the everyday moments that had connected them.
Hundreds of mourners gathered at St Anne’s Church to pay their respects, with family members, friends and members of the local community coming together to remember the couple.
The service was a farewell not only to Biddy and Jamie, but also a reminder of the two children whose loss had changed their family forever.
THE CIRCUMSTANCES SURROUNDING THEIR DEATHS
Biddy and Jamie were discovered at their home in Bray on the morning of October 21.
Following post-mortem examinations, Gardaí said there was no evidence of third-party involvement or foul play.
Reports indicated that Biddy may have passed away some time before Jamie discovered her. The exact medical circumstances surrounding her death were not fully established, and further toxicology results were expected to assist the investigation.
Jamie’s injuries were described by investigators as self-inflicted.
Authorities were preparing a file for the coroner, with an inquest expected to examine the circumstances of the deaths.
“LOVE IS STRONGER THAN DEATH”
As the funeral drew to a close, Father O’Kelly encouraged the grieving families to hold on to the image of Biddy and Jamie reunited with their children.
He reminded mourners that the couple should not be remembered only through the tragedies they had endured, but also through their love, kindness and the lives they had built together.
Their final resting place is now beside Jordan and Holly — the two children whose loss had remained at the centre of their family’s grief for so many years.
For those who knew them, the farewell was filled with sadness, but also with memories of two people who continued to matter deeply to their community.
Biddy and Jamie’s story is one of profound heartbreak, but also of kindness, family and enduring love. May they rest in peace together with Jordan and Holly. 🕊️🤍
