POST-MORTEM REVEALS CAUSE OF DEATH AFTER FATAL TIGER INCIDENT AT YORKSHIRE WILDLIFE PARK

A 24-year-old man died from multiple traumatic injuries after entering a tiger enclosure in England. An inquest has heard new details about the incident, while his family has raised concerns about the mental health support he received before his death.

DONCASTER, ENGLAND — An initial post-mortem examination has found that William Chapman, 24, died from multiple traumatic injuries following an encounter with a tiger at Yorkshire Wildlife Park in Doncaster, England.

The findings were revealed during the opening of an inquest at Doncaster Coroner’s Court on October 15, as authorities began examining the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Chapman died on October 10 after entering the enclosure of an Amur tiger named Altai. According to information presented at the hearing, he had visited the wildlife park that afternoon and climbed over two fences before entering the animal’s enclosure at approximately 1:30 p.m.

Coroner’s officer Caitlin Brookes told the hearing that Chapman was approached by the tiger and sustained multiple traumatic injuries during the ensuing physical encounter. Emergency services attended the scene, but his death was confirmed at the wildlife park.

The inquest also heard new information about Chapman’s mental health history.

He had previously been diagnosed with schizophrenia and had experienced episodes of psychosis, the hearing was told. He had been under the care of adult mental health services in Doncaster.

However, he was described during the proceedings as highly functioning and independent, with no specific care requirements.

Coroner’s officer Brookes said Chapman’s family had expressed a number of concerns about his contact with mental health services in the period leading up to his death.

His relatives had previously described him as having experienced significant mental health difficulties over several years and said he had been prescribed strong medication.

The family has said it hopes the authorities will establish what led to the events at the wildlife park. They have also asked for privacy as they cope with the loss.

INVESTIGATIONS LAUNCHED INTO THE CIRCUMSTANCES

Several investigations are now underway.

The Rotherham, Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust has launched an investigation into the mental health services provided to Chapman.

Meanwhile, City of Doncaster Council, the authority responsible for licensing the wildlife park, has begun a health and safety investigation. Information gathered by the council is expected to be shared with the coroner.

The opening hearing was preliminary, meaning it did not establish all the circumstances surrounding Chapman’s actions or determine whether any failures contributed to the incident.

A more detailed examination is expected during the full inquest.

Authorities have continued their enquiries into what happened at the enclosure.
