“SHE HAD A ZEST FOR LIFE” — ZARA SHAW, 16, REMEMBERED FOR HER INFECTIOUS SMILE AFTER RIVER WEAR TRAGEDY

“SHE HAD A ZEST FOR LIFE” — ZARA SHAW, 16, REMEMBERED FOR HER INFECTIOUS SMILE AFTER RIVER WEAR TRAGEDY

Zara was one of three teenagers who died after a black Audi A3 entered the River Wear in Sunderland. Now, her family have shared an emotional tribute to the daughter, sister and friend they say brought joy wherever she went.

For Zara Shaw, 16, there should have been so much more life ahead.

There should have been more birthdays, more dance videos, more laughter with friends and countless ordinary family moments that would one day become cherished memories.

Instead, her family are now having to remember those moments while coming to terms with a loss they never expected.

Zara was one of three teenagers who died after a car entered the River Wear in Sunderland on September 29.

Her death has left her family, friends, former teachers and a wider community grieving.

But behind the headlines, Zara’s family want people to remember something much more important than the tragedy itself.

They want people to remember Zara.

The girl with an infectious laugh.

The girl with a beautiful smile.

The daughter who made her parents proud.

And the sister who was deeply loved by Olivia.

Shortly before 1:30pm on Tuesday, September 29, Northumbria Police received reports that a black Audi A3 had come off the road at Panns Bank near Wearmouth Bridge and entered the River Wear.

Four teenagers were understood to have been inside the vehicle.

One 17-year-old boy managed to reach safety and suffered non-serious injuries.

But three others could not be saved.

They were Jackson Duke, 17, Luke Etheridge, 16, and Zara Shaw, 16.

Their bodies were recovered from the water following a major emergency response involving police, firefighters, ambulance crews, specialist divers and other emergency services.

Zara was from Newbottle, while Jackson and Luke were from the Sunderland area.

Their deaths sent shockwaves through the local community, particularly because all three were so young.

On October 2, Zara’s family released their first major public tribute through Northumbria Police.

Their words were not focused on the circumstances surrounding the crash.

They were about their daughter.

“Zara, you came into this world with a fight, and we know you left it doing the same,” they said.

“You had a zest for life and life loved you.”

It was a sentence that captured the way her family remembered her — as a teenager whose personality and energy had touched the people around her.

They also spoke about Zara’s close relationship with her sister, Olivia.

The family said Zara had been “created as a companion” for Olivia, who loved her “deeply and unconditionally.”

They said Zara had made them proud from the very beginning, studying, learning new skills and making lifelong friends along the way.

THE SMILE HER FAMILY WILL NEVER FORGET

Among the memories shared by Zara’s family were her dance videos, her laugh and her smile.

They described her laugh and smile as infectious.

Those details may sound simple, but they are often the things families hold onto most tightly after an unexpected loss.

Not a headline.

Not a police statement.

Not the details of an investigation.

But the little pieces of someone’s personality that made them who they were.

For Zara’s family, those memories include the fun she had making dance videos and the happiness she brought to the people around her.

They described her in many different roles:

A daughter.

A sister.

A granddaughter.

A niece.

A cousin.

A girlfriend.

And a best friend.

Each word represented another part of a life that meant something to someone.

HER FAMILY’S HEARTBREAKING THANKS

Zara’s family also addressed the people who had been part of her life.

“To everyone who has been in Zara’s life we thank you from the bottom of our hearts,” they said.

“You made her what she became.”

At a time when their own grief was overwhelming, they said they were humbled and grateful for the kindness and good wishes they had received.

They also thanked the Northumbria Police liaison officers and emergency services who responded to the incident.

Their gratitude came from a deeply personal place.

The family said they were thankful that Zara had not been treated simply as a name in an investigation, but as their child — someone who deserved care and dignity.

They also acknowledged that the tragedy would have affected the emergency responders who attended.

“REST SAFE OUR BEAUTIFUL GIRL”

Near the end of their tribute, Zara’s family returned to the memories that will remain with them.

“A tragedy has taken you but our memories remain blessed with having you as our daughter,” they said.

Then came the words that perhaps summed up everything they were trying to say:

“Rest safe our beautiful girl, Zara.”

For a family who had expected to watch their daughter grow older, the future now looks completely different.

But the memories remain.

HER SCHOOL REMEMBERS A KIND AND LOYAL STUDENT

Zara’s former school, Christ’s College in Sunderland, also paid tribute.

The school said Zara had attended from the age of four until leaving in the summer.

She was remembered as a “kind and loyal student” with a close-knit circle of friends.

Teachers said she maintained strong and positive relationships with both her peers and staff.

She worked hard and was described as a delight to teach.

For those who had known Zara throughout her school years, the news was another devastating reminder of how suddenly a young life can be lost.

The school extended its condolences to the families, friends and loved ones of all three teenagers.

THREE YOUNG LIVES, ONE DEVASTATING DAY

Zara was not the only teenager whose future was suddenly taken away.

Jackson Duke, 17, and Luke Etheridge, 16, also died in the same incident.

All three were students at Sunderland College’s Bede Campus.

The college said it was deeply saddened by the loss of three students and described the deaths as heartbreaking for both the college community and the wider city of Sunderland.

Friends and classmates later gathered near the River Wear to leave flowers and messages.

A white, heart-shaped balloon filled with messages was among the tributes left for Zara.

Cards and notes were attached to railings near the scene, with friends writing that they could not believe what had happened and that Zara would be missed.

The riverside became a place where teenagers who had known Zara could say goodbye.

THE INVESTIGATION CONTINUES

While the families mourn, Northumbria Police are continuing to investigate what happened.

A 17-year-old boy who survived the incident was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

He has since been released on bail pending further enquiries.

Police have stressed that enquiries remain ongoing to establish who was driving the Audi when it entered the river.

No other vehicles are believed to have been involved.

Police have appealed for anyone with information, CCTV footage or dashcam recordings to come forward.

They have also repeatedly urged people not to speculate about the circumstances of the crash, particularly on social media, because unconfirmed claims can cause additional pain to families already dealing with unimaginable grief.

MORE THAN THE TRAGEDY

It would be easy for Zara Shaw to become simply another name in a tragic news story.

But the words from her family make clear that she was so much more.

She was the girl who made dance videos.

The teenager whose laugh could fill a room.

The sister who was deeply loved by Olivia.

The daughter who made her parents proud.

The friend who built lifelong relationships.

The student remembered by teachers as kind, loyal and a delight to teach.

And the “beautiful girl” whose family say she had a zest for life.

Her life ended at just 16.

But the people who knew Zara are now carrying forward the memories of the life she did have.

The laughter.

The smile.

The dancing.

The friendships.

The family moments.

And all the little things that made Zara, Zara.

Her family ended their tribute with a simple message — one that says everything about the love that remains after such an unbearable loss:

“Forever in our thoughts, Zara.”

💔 Rest safe, beautiful girl.
