“I CAN’T GO THROUGH THIS ANYMORE…” TRACY SHAW BREAKS DOWN AHEAD OF BREAST CANCER TREATMENT
Former Coronation Street star Tracy Shaw broke down in tears as she opened up about the fear and uncertainty surrounding her breast cancer diagnosis, admitting that even a headache or small “twinge” can now leave her frightened about what it might mean.
The actress, best known for playing Maxine Peacock on the ITV soap, revealed her diagnosis in April 2026 after discovering a lump.
Since then, Shaw has been documenting her treatment journey and the emotional toll of living with cancer and waiting for each stage of her treatment plan.
“I CAN’T GO THROUGH THIS ANYMORE”
In an emotional video shared with her followers, Shaw described the psychological strain she had been experiencing as she prepared to begin chemotherapy.
She became tearful as she spoke about waking up each morning knowing that she had to face more hospital appointments and more uncertainty.
At one point, Shaw said: “I can’t go through this anymore.”
She then acknowledged the difficult contradiction she was facing — despite feeling overwhelmed, she had not even fully begun her treatment journey.
The actress explained that ordinary physical sensations had become a source of anxiety.
A headache or a small “twinge” could immediately make her worry that something was changing inside her body.
She described the road ahead as feeling like “a mountain.”
PREPARING FOR CHEMOTHERAPY
Shaw’s treatment plan involved chemotherapy before surgery.
She had initially hoped to move forward with surgery, but doctors determined that the tumours needed to shrink before an operation could take place.
In a later update, Shaw explained that an ultrasound showed the lesions had changed shape but had not reduced in size enough for surgery to go ahead at that stage.
She therefore continued with chemotherapy while waiting to see how her tumours responded to treatment.
Before beginning the process, Shaw also made the emotional decision to cut and donate her hair to The Little Princess Trust, which provides real-hair wigs for children and young people experiencing hair loss.
The charity confirmed that Shaw donated her hair before treatment and shared part of her emotional message about the uncertainty she was facing.
“ANOTHER STEP ON THIS BREAST CANCER JOURNEY”
Shaw had her long hair divided into sections before it was cut.
She described the donation as another step in her cancer journey and said she wanted to make the most of her hair before chemotherapy took it away.
Her decision attracted messages of support from fans and fellow performers.
The actress has continued to speak openly about the emotional reality of treatment rather than presenting the experience as straightforward.
That openness has allowed followers to see both the moments when she feels positive and the periods when fear and exhaustion become overwhelming.
THE PHYSICAL TOLL OF TREATMENT
Shaw’s journey has continued for months since that initial emotional update.
By September, she had undergone several rounds of chemotherapy and had spoken publicly about difficult side effects.
She also recently revealed that she missed an important hospital appointment after spending around 45 minutes trying unsuccessfully to find a parking space at Royal Berkshire Hospital.
Although she had arrived early, she was unable to find a space and ultimately missed the appointment.
Shaw later described the experience as causing “horrendous” anxiety, particularly because the appointment was one she had been looking forward to.
The setback came after she had already spoken about feeling extremely unwell following chemotherapy and experiencing what she described as an emotional “wobble.”
FROM MAXINE PEACOCK TO A NEW FIGHT
Shaw became widely known for her role as Maxine Peacock in Coronation Street, appearing on the soap from 1995 until 2003.
Her character was eventually killed in a dramatic storyline involving serial killer Richard Hillman.
Years after leaving the programme, Shaw has found herself facing a very different kind of battle — one that she has chosen to share publicly with her followers.
Her updates have included moments of fear, tears, treatment setbacks and physical side effects, but also determination to keep moving forward.
For Shaw, the hardest part has often been the uncertainty: waiting for appointments, waiting for test results and waiting to discover whether treatment is working sufficiently for the next stage.
TAKING THE JOURNEY ONE STEP AT A TIME
The actress has not hidden how frightened she has felt.
But by speaking openly about those emotions, Shaw has also received an outpouring of support from fans and fellow actors.
Her decision to donate her hair, document her chemotherapy and speak honestly about the psychological impact of her diagnosis has made her cancer journey deeply personal to those following her story.
And while she has described the road ahead as “a mountain,” Shaw continues to face the next stage of treatment one step at a time.
Her story remains ongoing as she continues chemotherapy and awaits further decisions from her medical team about surgery and the next phase of treatment.
