“YOU DIDN’T EVEN NOTICE ME!” — MIKE TINDALL REVEALS THE UNEXPECTED BEGINNING OF HIS LOVE STORY WITH ZARA

Mike Tindall has looked back on the moment he first met Zara in Australia, admitting he was too disappointed by a rugby setback to pay much attention to the woman who would eventually become his wife.

Mike Tindall has revealed more details about the unexpected beginning of his relationship with Zara Tindall, including why their first meeting in Australia in 2003 was far from a romantic encounter.

The former England rugby star recently joined his wife on the Talk Horse podcast, where the couple revisited the early days of their relationship and shared memories of how they first crossed paths.

During the conversation, Mike admitted that he was in a particularly bad mood when they met. At the time, he was in Australia with the England rugby team for the 2003 Rugby World Cup. Zara, meanwhile, was travelling around the country with friends during her gap year.

Their paths crossed at the Manly Wharf Bar in Sydney, where Mike had gone for a drink after learning he had been left out of England’s squad for the semi-final.

When host Pippa Funnell asked whether it had been love at first sight, Zara jokingly interrupted with a reminder: “You didn’t even notice me!”

Mike agreed that he had not paid much attention to her during that first encounter. He explained that being dropped from the team had left him frustrated, particularly because it was the semi-final of such an important tournament.

He did, however, remember Zara’s group of friends, describing them as particularly loud during their time together.

Although their first meeting was brief, the story did not end there.

Mike was at the bar with fellow England players Martin Corry and Austin Healey. Austin already knew Zara and later gave Mike her phone number, explaining that she wanted him to get in touch so they could arrange to meet again after the tournament.

In a 2011 interview with the Daily Mail, Mike recalled that Austin encouraged him to send Zara a message about where the group would be going out after the final.

Mike eventually contacted her, and the two began communicating.

England went on to win the 2003 Rugby World Cup, defeating Australia in the final. Looking back, Mike has described being left out of the semi-final team as a remarkable turning point, joking that it may have been one of former England coach Clive Woodward’s best decisions.

Without that disappointment, he might never have met Zara that evening.

Their first date was not quite what people might expect

After returning from Australia, their connection continued to develop.

Zara invited Mike to attend the North Cotswold Ball as her date, and their friendship gradually became something more.

Mike previously shared the story of their first proper date during his appearance on the television programme I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! in 2022.

He recalled that they initially went out for lunch locally. However, the simple outing turned into a much longer and livelier afternoon.

“We just went out for lunch locally,” he explained. “And ended up being quite a boozy one.”

He then joked that they discovered they both enjoyed having a good time, adding: “It was a good start.”

The couple have also revealed that their relationship began as a friendship rather than an immediate romance.

According to Mike, they gradually realised how much time they were spending together before their connection developed into a relationship.

They reportedly became an official couple on April 27, 2004.

From a rugby star and an equestrian to a royal wedding

At the time they met, Mike was already an established England rugby international. He played as a centre and was part of the team that won the 2003 Rugby World Cup.

Zara was also building an impressive sporting career. The daughter of Princess Anne and Captain Mark Phillips, she became an accomplished equestrian and went on to represent Great Britain at the Olympic Games.

Unlike some other members of the Royal Family, Zara does not hold a royal title. She has pursued her own career in equestrian sport while maintaining a relatively private family life.

Mike was gradually introduced to Zara’s family. He has previously joked that he met more members of her family than most people would normally meet when beginning a new relationship.

After several years together, Mike proposed in December 2010. The engagement was officially announced by Buckingham Palace, with Princess Anne and Captain Mark Phillips expressing their pleasure at the news.

The couple married on July 30, 2011, at Canongate Kirk in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Their wedding attracted considerable attention, with members of the Royal Family, including Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, among the guests.

Three children and a life together away from the royal spotlight

Since their wedding, Mike and Zara have built a family together and welcomed three children.

Their eldest daughter, Mia Grace, was born in January 2014. Their second daughter, Lena Elizabeth, arrived in June 2018, followed by their son, Lucas Philip, in March 2021.

The couple have continued to balance family life with their sporting commitments. Zara remains active in equestrian competition, while Mike has pursued television, podcasting and other media projects following his retirement from professional rugby.

Over the years, the pair have often attracted attention for their relaxed public appearances and playful sense of humour.

Their recent conversation on Talk Horse offered another glimpse into the relationship behind those public moments.

What began at a bar in Sydney with a disappointed rugby player who barely noticed the woman standing nearby eventually became a marriage that has lasted more than 15 years.

And perhaps the most surprising part of their story is that the moment that changed their lives almost passed without either of them realising what it would become.
