The Rancher’s Dead Wife Left Behind a Secret No One in Silver Ridge Wanted Emily to Discover
Emily Carter couldn’t forget the stranger’s warning.
“The last woman who lived there didn’t survive the winter.”
As Jacob’s wagon climbed toward his isolated Montana ranch, Emily finally found the courage to ask.
“What happened to Lily’s mother?”
Jacob’s jaw tightened.
“Margaret died three winters ago.”
“Was she ill?”
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then he answered, “That’s what the town believes.”
Emily felt a chill despite the afternoon sunshine.
Before she could question him further, Lily reached across the wagon and slipped her tiny hand into Emily’s.
“Papa doesn’t like talking about Mama,” she whispered. “Especially about the night she disappeared.”
Jacob stopped the horses.
“Lily.”
The little girl immediately lowered her eyes.
They continued in silence.
By sunset, the ranch appeared beyond a stretch of pine trees. A beautiful wooden house stood beneath the mountains, surrounded by grazing horses and open fields.
Emily wanted to believe she’d finally found a home.
But that evening, while unpacking her belongings, she discovered something hidden inside the bedroom wardrobe.
A woman’s blue dress.
Carefully folded beneath it was a letter addressed to Jacob.
The handwriting was elegant, but the final lines made Emily’s blood run cold.
If anything happens to me, don’t believe what they tell you. The truth is buried where the old apple tree stands.
Emily stared at the signature.
Margaret Walker.
Suddenly, footsteps sounded behind her.
Jacob stood in the doorway.
His face went pale when he saw the letter.
“Where did you find that?”
Emily held it against her chest.
“Jacob, what happened to your wife?”
Before he could answer, a sharp knock echoed through the house.
A stranger stood outside, wearing a dark coat and carrying a leather case.
“Evening, Walker,” he said. “Heard you brought yourself another bride.”
Jacob moved protectively in front of Emily.
The stranger smiled.
“Then perhaps it’s time your new wife learned why Margaret never made it out of Silver Ridge alive.”
Emily watched Jacob’s face harden.
And for the first time since arriving in Montana, she wondered whether the man who had defended her so fiercely was protecting her from the town…
Or protecting a secret from her.
