PART 2: THE SECRET THAT COULD GET THEM BOTH KILLED

PART 2: THE SECRET THAT COULD GET THEM BOTH KILLED
The following morning, Silas rode into Bear’s Hollow and discovered Clara’s reward notice nailed inside the saloon.

He read every word before pouring whiskey over the paper.

“They’re not claiming anything,” he muttered. “She’s a human being.”

When Silas returned, Clara was standing beside the cabin window, clutching his leather belt with trembling fingers.

“They’re coming for me, aren’t they?”

Silas looked toward the distant mountains.

“Yes. And they won’t stop until they find you.”

That night, they burned Clara’s ruined wedding dress and prepared to leave. Silas knew the mountain trails better than anyone, but the storm had made every journey dangerous.

For three days, they traveled west, avoiding settlements and covering their tracks. Clara discovered that the scarred cowboy was not simply protecting her out of kindness. Years earlier, he had lost someone because he had trusted the wrong people. He refused to let history repeat itself.

On the fourth morning, three riders appeared behind them.

Silas recognized their leader immediately.

He pulled Clara from the saddle, helped her mount his fastest horse, and placed the reins in her hands.

“Ride west. Don’t stop until you reach the river.”

Clara shook her head.

“I’m not leaving you!”

Silas loaded his rifle and looked directly into her eyes.

“You told me this was your first time trusting a man. Trust me one more time.”

Tears streamed down Clara’s face as she finally rode away.

Behind her, Silas stood alone in the snow. The three armed men surrounded him, their horses stamping against the frozen ground.

Then their leader removed his hat.

Clara suddenly heard a familiar voice calling after her.

It was the depot clerk.

The same man who had told her Amos Reed was dead. The same man who had watched her arrive in her wedding dress and pretended to know nothing about the conspiracy.

But if Amos was dead, why was his trusted associate still hunting Clara?

And what terrible secret had Silas uncovered before she ever arrived at the cabin?

Clara tightened her grip on the reins and turned her horse around.

She had spent her entire life running from men who believed they owned her.

This time, she was going back.
