Prince Mateen and Princess Anisha of Brunei welcome their first child, a daughter

Prince Abdul Mateen and Princess Anisha Rosnah welcomed a new member to their family with the birth of their first child, a baby girl, on February 8th.

The joyful news was announced via a statement from the Sultan’s Office, stating: Princess Anisha Rosnah binti Adam, wife of Prince Muda Abdul Mateen ibni Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, safely gave birth to a baby girl at 8:50 AM on February 8th (corresponding to the 20th day of Syaaban in the Islamic calendar, 1447) in the capital Bandar Seri Begawan.

To celebrate, 17 cannon shots were fired at the grounds of Istana Nurul Iman Palace β the main residence of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, Prince Mateen’s father and the world’s longest-reigning monarch. The news was widely reported by international newspapers, highlighting the family’s joy and Brunei’s royal traditions. Many embassies also sent public congratulations on social media, wishing the young family health and happiness.

Despite being born into a wealthy and powerful royal family, the baby girl is not in the line of succession to the Brunei throne. According to the 1959 Regulations on Succession and Regency in the Brunei Constitution, only males are eligible to inherit the throne.

Prince Abdul Mateen, 34, is the fifth son in the line of succession to Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, who has 10 children. In October 2025, the couple announced they were expecting their first child on social media with a romantic photo of them holding hands and the caption: “And then we became three,” expressing their great joy.
They held a lavish 10-day royal wedding in January 2024 in Brunei, attracting international attention. Prior to his marriage, Prince Mateen was known as one of the world’s most attractive bachelors, frequently appearing at sporting events and closely followed by the public.
