DOCTORS ADVISED TERMINATION AFTER AN ULTRASOUND SHOWED THE BABY HAD AN UNUSUALLY LARGE HEAD — BUT THE MOTHER REFUSED, AND THE OUTCOME SURPRISED EVERYONE

During a 20-week ultrasound, doctors discovered the baby had an abnormally large head, a sign of hydrocephalus.

A baby boy born with a swollen head is bravely fighting for his life, proving the doctors may have been too quick when they advised his mother to end the pregnancy from the start.

This is Lorenzo Pontone, born on January 8th. His mother, Nichaela Pontone (West Yorkshire, England), was advised to end the pregnancy during a 20-week ultrasound. Doctors discovered Lorenzo had an abnormally large head, a sign of hydrocephalus.

“They said he was unlikely to survive after birth, and if he did, he would be blind, deaf, have constant seizures, and be unable to move. To me, that felt like the only option—ending the pregnancy,” Nichaela’s husband recounted.

However, the couple talked for a whole day, considering all the issues, and decided to keep the baby.

“I think it’s unfair to Lorenzo. He already has arms, legs, and a face; how could we give up on him? We’ll let things happen naturally,” Nichaela shared.

On January 8th, Lorenzo was born at 36 weeks after a C-section because his head was too large. “He was born, but it took him a few minutes to cry. I felt like a century had passed before I could finally hear him cry and breathe a sigh of relief,” Nichaela recalled.

In his first two weeks, Lorenzo underwent brain surgery, was on a ventilator, and couldn’t close his eyes. However, the little “warrior” defied all the risks and amazed both his parents and doctors as his condition improved, allowing him to breathe on his own and close his eyes.

Currently, Lorenzo has a tube to drain fluid from his brain into his stomach, meaning his head will gradually become less swollen.

Nichaela and her husband don’t know how this condition will affect their son in the long term, but they are still proud of their “miracle” child because he has made it through so much.

“I’m so glad I didn’t choose to end the pregnancy. The moment we saw him, we fell in love with him. I can’t stop trembling and crying when I think about the decision we almost made,” Nichaela’s husband said.

Nichaela has also created a Facebook group and shared in detail about her baby’s journey.

“I want to raise awareness about hydrocephalus because I’ve spoken to quite a few other mothers about their children having this condition or similar brain disorders.

And I also want to show that doctors aren’t always right when they give you the worst-case scenarios. They said Lorenzo wouldn’t be able to breathe on his own and would have seizures, but so far he has shown the opposite,” Nichaela wrote.
