Milestone Rescue: 1,000 Beagles Freed from Ridglan Farms
WISCONSIN — In a landmark rescue operation, 1,000 beagles have been safely removed from Ridglan Farms, the breeding and research facility that has long been at the center of animal welfare concerns. Big Dog Ranch Rescue coordinated the removal and transport of the dogs, ensuring their safety and well-being throughout the process.
Meanwhile, the Center for a Humane Economy is preparing to rescue the remaining 500 dogs still at the facility, continuing what has been described as a historic effort to provide care and freedom to animals long subjected to confinement and neglect.
At a staging ranch in Dane County, the most recently rescued beagles are beginning the process of transitioning to life outside the facility. Teams are providing:
- Comprehensive medical exams
- Vaccinations and preventive care
- Microchipping for identification
- Rehabilitation and preparation for relocation to permanent homes
For many of these dogs, this marks their first experience with grass, fresh air, and human affection. Volunteers and rescuers have described scenes of beagles tentatively exploring their new surroundings, some even playfully investigating new objects around them.
“This is what we’ve been fighting for,” said Lauree Simmons, a longtime animal welfare advocate. “To see them running freely, experiencing the world for the first time—it’s all worth it.”
For advocates, the operation has felt almost surreal. For the beagles themselves, it represents freedom and a chance at a new life—something many have never known.
This rescue operation underscores the power of coordinated efforts between animal welfare organizations and highlights the importance of continued vigilance and support for animals in research and breeding facilities.
Full updates on the beagles’ progress and relocation will continue to be shared by participating rescue organizations.
