HISTORIC MILESTONE REACHED IN RIDGLAN FARMS BEAGLE RESCUE: 1,000 DOGS FREED

A historic moment has arrived in Wisconsin as Big Dog Ranch Rescue officially completed the removal of all 1,000 beagles it purchased from Ridglan Farms, a long-criticized breeding and research facility. The milestone marks a major turning point in what has been one of the largest and most emotionally charged animal rescue efforts in recent memory.

With the first phase complete, the next stage is already underway. The Center for a Humane Economy is preparing to enter Ridglan Farms to remove the remaining 500 dogs included in its agreement, continuing the mission to provide every dog with the care, rehabilitation, and loving homes they have long been denied.

The rescued beagles were transported to a staging ranch in Dane County, where they began receiving critical medical care, vaccinations, microchipping, and rehabilitation in preparation for relocation. For many of these animals, this was the first time in their lives they experienced grass beneath their paws, fresh air, and the freedom to explore without barriers. Volunteers described the scene as both joyful and overwhelming, filled with dogs experiencing the simplest pleasures of life for the first time.

“This is something we’ve all been fighting for,” said Lauree Simmons, a volunteer on the ground. “To see it happen, to watch these dogs walk on grass for the first time, smell fresh air, and begin to experience normal life, it’s all worth it.” Simmons spoke amidst a flurry of activity, as newly released beagles ran freely across the fields, exploring their surroundings with curiosity and cautious excitement. One particularly curious puppy even investigated a nearby microphone, eliciting laughter from the rescue team.

After years of confinement in a controlled laboratory environment, many of the beagles are now experiencing basic joys that most pets take for granted: sunlight, open spaces, toys, and consistent human affection. Each step they take outside is a profound reminder of what they were previously denied, and a testament to the dedication of countless advocates who fought for their freedom.

For the volunteers, rescuers, and advocates who have been involved for years, witnessing these dogs finally step into freedom is almost surreal.
