HEARTBREAK IN HAWAIʻI: Beloved Monk Seal Kaʻale Passes Away

Hawaiʻi is mourning the loss of one of its most cherished marine residents: Kaʻale (RH32), a Hawaiian monk seal well known along the Waiʻanae coast. For years, Kaʻale captured the hearts of locals and visitors alike, becoming a living symbol of Hawaiʻi’s vibrant—but fragile—ocean ecosystem.

Throughout his life, Kaʻale faced numerous human-related dangers, including fishing hook injuries, entanglements, and other hazards. Thanks to the tireless work of local wildlife teams and federal agencies, he survived these challenges, offering hope and inspiration to the community and conservationists across the islands.

On May 6, Kaʻale was recovered near Nānākuli by wildlife response teams with the support of several local and federal organizations. The exact cause of his death is still under investigation, and experts urge the public to avoid speculation while scientific testing continues.

For many in the Waiʻanae community and beyond, Kaʻale was more than a seal. He was a familiar presence, a friend, and a reminder of the delicate balance between humans and the natural world. His playful movements in the surf, his interactions with the community, and his remarkable survival through previous injuries made him a symbol of resilience, courage, and the urgent need to protect endangered species.

Kaʻale’s passing is a poignant reminder that Hawaiʻi’s marine life faces constant threats, from human activity to climate change. Conservationists emphasize that every effort—from respecting wildlife guidelines on beaches to supporting marine protection programs—can make a difference in safeguarding species like Kaʻale.

While we grieve, Kaʻale’s legacy lives on. He leaves behind a community inspired to care more deeply for Hawaiʻi’s oceans and a message that the survival of endangered animals depends on our collective action.

Rest peacefully, Kaʻale. Your story will continue to inspire generations.
