TEEN TRAGEDY DURING UK HEATWAVE AS 14-YEAR-OLD BOY DIES IN RIVER INCIDENT
A community in Oxford is mourning the heartbreaking loss of 14-year-old Baltazar L’Quy, who tragically died after getting into difficulty in the River Thames during Britain’s record-breaking heatwave
Emergency services rushed to the area near Donnington Bridge shortly before 6pm on Wednesday following reports of a person in distress in the water
Despite desperate rescue efforts, Baltazar was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
Community Left Devastated
The Oxford Timorese Community Association later confirmed the teenager’s identity and described the tragedy as a devastating loss not only for his family, but for the wider Timorese community across the UK.
Speaking to the BBC, a representative of the association said:
“This has been a very painful moment, not only for the family, but also for the Timorese community, in Oxford and across the United Kingdom.”
Tributes have continued pouring in online as friends, neighbours, and community members remember Baltazar as a young life taken far too soon 🕊️
Twelfth Water-Related Death During Heatwave
Baltazar’s death is believed to be the twelfth fatal water-related incident recorded during the recent spell of extreme heat across the UK.
Authorities and safety organisations have repeatedly warned about the hidden dangers of open water during hot weather, stressing that rivers, lakes, and reservoirs can quickly become deadly even for experienced swimmers
Experts say sudden cold-water shock, strong currents, hidden debris, and exhaustion can overwhelm swimmers within seconds.
Investigation Ongoing
Emergency crews, police, and rescue teams remained at the scene following the incident as authorities continued inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
Officials are once again urging the public to exercise extreme caution around open water during the ongoing heatwave.
A young life lost in moments.
Another tragedy during soaring temperatures.
And a grieving community searching for strength after unimaginable heartbreak.
