Bungee Jump Death in Brazil: Instructors Arrested After 21-Year-Old Woman Falls to Her Death from Bridge
A 21-year-old Brazilian woman died after being thrown from a bridge during a bungee jump without a safety rope attached, prompting the arrest of three instructors and a criminal investigation into the unlicensed operation.
Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas fell approximately 40 meters (130 feet) from the disused Ponte do Esqueleto (Skeleton Bridge) in Limeira, São Paulo, on June 13, 2026. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Disturbing video footage shows the young woman being carried to the edge of the bridge by two workers and released while wearing only a helmet. She was not connected to any bungee cord. Bystanders can be heard screaming “the rope!” as she fell.
Arrests and Investigation
Three men — ages 27, 32, and 42 — were arrested and charged with homicide with eventual intent. Two others who initially fled the scene were later apprehended. In total, six people were questioned in connection with the incident.
Authorities stated that the group operating the jumps had no official authorization to conduct the activity at the location. Investigators believe basic safety procedures were not followed, including the critical step of properly tethering the participant.
One of the detained instructors reportedly told police they could not recall who was responsible for attaching the rope to Maria Eduarda. The missing action camera she was wearing during the jump has also not been recovered.
A Life Cut Short
Maria Eduarda, a recent graduate in Physical Education and Sports Management, was described by friends and colleagues as a vibrant, adventurous young woman. She worked as an instructor at a local gym and was passionate about sports and nature.
Just moments before the jump, she posted on Instagram showing her wristbands and the bridge with the caption: “Who was the crazy person who let me come jump off a bridge?”
Her death has sent shockwaves through her community. Colleagues at her gym expressed deep sorrow, describing her as someone who brought “dedication, affection, joy, and respect” to everyone around her.
What Happens Next
The investigation remains active. Prosecutors are examining video evidence, witness statements, and the actions of the operators after the fall. Questions have been raised about whether basic safety protocols were ignored and why the activity was being conducted without proper authorization.
The case has also sparked renewed discussion in Brazil about the regulation of adventure tourism and the risks associated with unlicensed operators conducting high-risk activities at disused structures.
For Maria Eduarda’s family and loved ones, the focus remains on seeking justice and answers in what has become one of the most tragic and widely discussed incidents in recent weeks.
